HONOLULU — Honolulu City officials say they’ve cleared the way to send giant wrapped packages to the mainland by July — big bundles of trash headed for the landfill at Roosevelt, Wash.
The plan is to ship out more than 100,000 tons a year at a cost of $7 million.
That’s expected to start by July now that the last protest over bidding for the trash export plan has been resolved.
In January, the city upheld the low bid from one of three firms vying for the project.
Hawaiian Waste Systems’ low bid was challenged by two companies — Off-Island Transfer and Simcoe Environmental Services Inc. — that claimed Hawaiian Waste was low-balling its bid of $99 a ton.
The competitors had bid up to twice as much.
