After regrouping briefly, crews resumed their search around 2:30 p.m. for a Longview-area man who disappeared around 6 a.m. Tuesday while swimming in the Columbia River near Cottonwood Island.
The missing man has been identified as Jacob "Jake" Thomas Woods, 25, of Longview, according to Cowlitz County Sheriff Bill Mahoney. The Sheriff's office has contacted the missing man's family.
The Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office, divers from Cowlitz Dive Rescue and a fire service boat from the Woodland Fire Department spent much of the morning searching for the 25-year-old man. Another boat from Clark County joined the search Tuesday afternoon.
The missing man was among seven people camping on the north side of the island, which is near the mouth of the Cowlitz River south of Kelso.
A few minutes after two of the men left to go swimming in the river, one of them returned, saying he couldn’t find his companion. The two were attempting to swim to a buoy and back, Mahoney said.
Authorities are asking boaters to “use extreme caution in the area” and to call 911 if they spot anyone in the water.
It would be the second drowning-related incident in the area in a week. On Friday, Allen Heck, 20, of Longview drowned while saving a 9-year-old girl who had slipped into a deep spot while playing in the Cowlitz River.
