In the tale of Cinderella, Prince Charming goes from house to house trying to find the girl whose foot the slipper fits. Sunday, Kelso police found their Cinderella on the first try — but her tale doesn’t have a happy ending.
Police said Lisa Leann Perez, 42, of Kelso was drunk when she drove her Chevrolet Astro van through the south wall of the Cowlitz County Historical Museum, 405 Allen St., around 4:45 a.m. Sunday.
Museum Director David Freece said Monday morning that the van stopped just short of hitting a historic printing press on exhibit in the lobby.
Police said the van turned from Allen Street, drove through a hedge and smashed through the large window in the corner of the lobby. The van was unoccupied when police arrived around 4:50 a.m. Sunday, but the driver left a pair of shoes behind.
As officers were investigating, dispatchers received a call from the registered owner, Perez, claiming her van had been stolen.
The officer who went to Perez’s address in the 900 block of South Pacific to take the report noticed she wasn't wearing shoes and didn’t seem to know where they were.
He told her she left her shoes in her vehicle, and she then admitted driving the van into the museum, the report said. She was cited with driving under the influence of alcohol and hit and run (unattended).
Freece said his staff hadn’t been able to look the scene over completely, but his initial check showed no major damage to exhibits.
The drywall will need patching and the window will have to be replaced, but as far as he can tell there’s no structural damage to the building, he said. The van damaged some landscaping and a small wall outside, but it missed the demonstration garden on the same side of the building, he said.
This is the second time a vehicle has crashed into the museum, Freece said. In 2001, an unoccupied church bus rolled down the hill and hit the middle of the building on the east side.
