A 15-year-old Lewis County teen has died from alcohol poisoning after drinking at a party over the weekend, according to the Lewis County sheriff’s office.
Nick Barnes, a sophomore at Onalaska High School, died around 7 p.m. Monday at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma.
He was flown there from Centralia’s Providence Hospital where he was taken by private vehicle about 3 a.m. Saturday, according to the sheriff’s office.
Authorities said Tuesday they have spoken to an adult who they believe gave alcohol to the teen and other juveniles attending a party at a house in in Onalaska.
How much alcohol the teen consumed was not released.
His death has hit the small Lewis County community hard, said Onalaska High School Principal Kevin Ryan. Barnes was a sophomore at the school and Ryan, who was his driver-education teacher, called him “a very likable young man” who was friends with a wide range of students.
Barnes played football as a freshman and was an office assistant. He had moved to Onalaska with his mother two years ago from Seattle, Ryan said, where he had been a student at Madison Middle School.
Onalaska students held a candlelight vigil for him Monday night at the school.
Counselors were brought in Tuesday to help students and others cope with the loss, Ryan said.
