I seldom get mad enough to write about a subject, but after hearing one of the commercials put out by the Democratic Party Oct. 17 on one of the local radio stations, I can no longer hold my peace.
The commercial touts the benefits of unions and how the Democratic Party supports unions, so please vote that way. It is enough to nauseate me.
Let me tell you a true story.
Back in the early 1980s, I was in one of the local unions at one of the local mills. I was in the testing laboratory. One of the tests I was required to run had to do with how the machinery was cleaning up certain chemicals before they were released into the local atmosphere.
One of my peers was a very vocal member of the union.
The supervisors suspected that this co-worker was not doing the test, but just marking the results in the log. They set up a system where, when it was his shift, they taped off both the incoming chemical valve and the outgoing chemical valve which showed the results after they were run through some type of special cleaning equipment.
At the end of this man's shift, he had marked in the testing log two entries that were completely falsified. Needless to say, the company fired him.
That's where our "valuable" union came into play. They went to bat for this employee and fought the company over his dismissal. The results just blew my mind. This man not only was re-hired, but given a raise and moved to another division.
This so disgusted me that, not long after that, I found work in another company — non-union, of course.
I have not since, nor will I ever, work for a union company again. For them to say that you should vote Democrat because they support unions is a red flag for me. Do I really want to vote for a candidate just because he is a "union supporter"? You need to ask yourself the same question.
By the way, I am voting Democratic for one man, Jon Dieter. I know of his integrity and his willingness to do what is right, not what is expedient. He is not, by the way, a "union man."
