BIRDSVIEW — A 49-year-old Birdsview grandmother could face assault charges after her dog attacked her infant grandchild twice in two days, according to the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office.

The 9-month-old girl is now in pediatric intensive care at Seattle Children’s Hospital with life-threatening wounds. The baby was flown to the hospital with a skull fracture and cuts to her face, scalp and eye from the most recent attack Aug. 2. The day before, the dog bit the child’s ear, requiring her to have surgery to reattach part of it, states a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.

The infant had been in the grandmother’s care during both attacks by her dog, Hercules, a 3-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback and Labrador mix, said Will Reichardt, chief criminal deputy with the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office.

The child had recently moved into the Russell Road home with her 21-year-old mother and 18-year-old father. The parents were not at home when the attacks occurred, Reichardt said.

The Sheriff’s Office is not pursuing charges against the parents.

“It was the grandmother who was negligent in watching the child and keeping the dog away,” Reichardt said.

The Sheriff’s Office referred the case to the Skagit County prosecutor Tuesday. Prosecutor Rich Weyrich said he does not yet know if charges will be filed.
