SEATTLE — Two Australians are being sued in Washington state on claims that they used sexually alluring Internet advertising to sell bogus cures.
Besides the case brought in King County Superior Court in Seattle, Leanne Rita Vassallo and Aaron David Smith of Cecil Hills, a suburb of Sydney, are being sued by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission in the Federal Court of Australia.
Vassallo and Smith are accused of using fake testimonials from nonexistent people, many giving Washington state addresses, to obtain relatively low payments for phony home remedy cures for a wide range of diseases.
A typical payment was $17.95, but state Assistant Attorney General Paula L. Selis says information obtained through subpoenas for online payment records indicates they made more than $1 million.
