BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Authorities have confirmed that the boyfriend of a woman who was found slain with her baby son in Ferndale is being investigated in the deaths.

Bail was set at $1 million on Thursday for 27-year-old Daniel Edward Johnson in an unrelated case.

Mac Setter, chief criminal deputy prosecutor for Whatcom County in northwest Washington, said Johnson is a “person of interest” in the killings of 24-year-old Laura McQueen and her 1-year-old son, Dominic Blackburn.

They were found dead in McQueen’s apartment on Wednesday — the same day Johnson turned himself in on a warrant for second-degree escape.

Ferndale Police Lt. Matt Huffman has said that Johnson called police from a gas station at about 5:50 a.m. Wednesday to turn himself in — three hours before McQueen’s nephew found the bodies in the apartment a block away.

Setter says the warrant was issued when Johnson failed in November to return to the Whatcom County Jail, where he was awaiting trial on a felony drug charge. Johnson had been released to go to the Skagit County Jail to resolve two pending charges there but never returned, Setter said.

Setter said he requested the high bail in that case because of investigators’ interest in Johnson in the Ferndale slayings.

Johnson’s public defender, Mark Bratlien, did not contest the bail amount.

Setter tells The Bellingham Herald that police are also looking at other possible suspects.

Johnson’s next court appearance is scheduled for March 13.
