Public ports are not immune to economic down times, as the Port of Longview learned at the beginning of the decade. Weyerhaeuser Co. gobbled up Portland-based Willamette Industries in 2002 and consolidated with its private logyard, drastically cutting the port’s log export business.

Port of Kalama focused on adding small businesses to industrial park
The Port of Kalama hasn’t been spared by the economic downturn, port director Lanny Cawley said. In the port’s 75-acre industrial park, manufacturers have looked to cut costs by cutting the floor space they rent. This year, port revenue is down about 5 percent from 2008, but most businesses at the port are poised to start growing again once the economy quickens, Cawley said.
