Things don’t look good for the Castle Rock Library levy. It still was failing as of Friday, and today is the last day for ballots to be counted.

County election officials last week predicted the measure would pass because it gained votes for several days following the Nov. 4 election. The measure remains close and needs just 12 more “yes” votes with no additional no votes to pass. With just a few days left for any last-minute ballots to trickle in, though, it didn’t look promising Friday afternoon. The levy requires a 60 percent supermajority to pass.

The votes as of Friday were 474 yes and 324 no, for a 59.4 percent approval rate. The percentage hadn’t changed for a week.

The $42,000 levy would cost the owner of a $150,000 home $75 a year and replaces the current year levy. The city has run the levy since 2000 to keep the library open. The money pays for the library’s operating expenses and without it it’s likely the library would close.

City officials, however, said they haven’t wanted to discuss closure until the results are official.

Ballots must have been postmarked by election day and must arrive at the Cowlitz County Elections office by 5 p.m. today to be counted. The election will be certified Tuesday.
