The Kelso School Board on Monday unanimously opposed Initiative 1033, which would cap annual growth of government budgets if Washington voters approve it in the Nov. 3 general election.

School board members said they worry a cap would reduce the state’s general fund budget and likely lead to cuts in K-12 education.

“As a school district, what affects us directly is if it limits the state budget. Nearly 50 percent of state budget funds education,” said Kelso School Board President Patty Wood. “It would not be good for our school district because of the loss of revenues.”

Longview City Council also voted last week to oppose the measure, which is sponsored by Tim Eyman.
