A large fight late Sunday night landed a 19-year-old Kelso man in the hospital with a traumatic head injury, and the suspect is in jail with $100,000 bail.

“People got intoxicated, got into a fight and things got bad,” said Capt. Vern Thompson.

Kelso police said David Randel Childs, 20, of Kelso admitted hitting Timothy Schuette in the head more than once with a baseball bat in the 1400 block of Home Court, Kelso. Initially everyone, including Childs, told police they never saw who attacked the victim, the report said.

According to the police report, the victim had a large cut over his left eye, another cut over his left ear, and may have bleeding in the brain. Thompson said the victim was Life-Flighted from St. John Medical Center to another hospital.

Police recovered a bat covered in blood from Childs’ house, the report said.

“He’s just a good kid. It’s just sad,” said Gail Lewis, who said her children are friends with Schuette. She said he lives with his grandmother in North Kelso.
