The man pictured in a “Can You ID Me?” bulletin in Thursday’s Daily News and on the Longview Police Detectives’ Web site is not a suspect, Detective Sgt. Mike Hallowell said Thursday.
The man called police immediately when he saw his photograph along with a story asking for help in identifying the person who used a stolen credit card, Hallowell said.
“He’s not the suspect,” Hallowell said. “He’s been exonerated.”
Hallowell said the mistake occurred because the report listed the wrong time for the transaction involving the stolen card.
When they launched the site last fall, police acknowedged it’s possible an innocent person’s photo could be posted, but they said the photos can be used to find witnesses or rule people out as suspects.
“If your picture is on there, it just means we need to talk to you,” Detective Doug Kazensky said at the time. “It doesn’t mean you’re guilty, or you’re a bad guy. It just means you have some information we want to talk to you about.”
