A 14-year-old boy was taken to St. John Medical Center on Tuesday afternoon after he was struck in the same crosswalk on Allen Street where two girls were seriously injured earlier this year.

The boy’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, said Capt. Darr Kirk of the Kelso Police Department.

No further information was released about the boy or the drivers involved because of the ongoing investigation, Kirk said.

The boy was struck just before 4 p.m. after a car stopped to let him cross in the 700 block of Allen Street. Another car rear-ended the stopped car, thrusting it into the boy, Kirk said.

No citations have been issued yet, but the case remains under investigation, Kirk said.

The incident occured at the same crosswalk between South Fifth and South Eighth avenues where two teenage girls received serious injuries after they were struck by a 90-year-old driver in February. One girl had a skull fracture and other injuries and both suffered broken legs. Both are expected to make full recoveries.

The February crash promoted the Kelso City Council to ask staff in March to look into adding flashing lights or other safety improvements at the crosswalk.

On Tuesday, Mayor David Futcher said he’d again bring the matter up to the council during that night’s meeting.

Futcher said the road is a state highway, so it’s up to the state to either decide on changes or give the city permission to make it’s own.

“I think we’d like to see something done there. I just don’t know what control we have over it,” he said.
