Three hunting blinds closed at Ridgefield refuge
Because the number of dusky Canada geese has fallen, three hunting blinds will be closed this season at the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge.
Recent hunting data shows a disproportionately high harvest of dusky geese from blinds 17, 18 and 19.
These blinds will still be open for duck hunting.
For more information about hunting at the refuge, contact Eric Anderson at (360) 887-4106 or Eric_Anderson@fws.gov.
Cookbook raises money to create habitat, help feed elk herds in winter
The Mount St. Helens Preservation Society has published a cookbook as a fundraiser. Profits from the cookbook will create wildlife habitat and help feed wild elk herds during severe winter months.
The society sometimes feeds elk in the Toutle River Valley even when the Department of Fish and Wildlife decides weather isn’t severe enough to warrant feeding.
The cookbook, “Feeding the Herd,” is a collection of favorite recipes from society members, families and friends. It contains 200 recipes, numerous cooking tips and information about the organization.
The cookbook is available at Drew’s Grocery Store in Toutle, on-line at www.mtsthelensociety.org, or by sending a check or money order payable to Mt. St. Helens Preservation Society, P.O. Box 350, Toutle, WA 98649. Or call 1-800-915-9914. The price is $18.95 plus $4.50 shipping.
Lots of action coming up for birders
Birders and those interested in learning more about the activity can mark their calendars for three annual counts to be held near year’s end.
The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is held annually around the country. Volunteers head into the field with binoculars and counting charts, and people may instead count birds at their feeders that day.
Three local events are planned:
The Willapa Hills and Discovery Coast Audubon chapters will co-sponsor the Leadbetter CBC from dawn to dusk Dec. 19. To join a field team or volunteer to count at your feeder, call Alan Richards, 360-484-7119. or e-mail birdcounts@willapahillsaudubon.org.
The Wahkiakum CBC date is to be announced. Contact Andrew Emlen, 360-795-8009.
The Cowlitz-Columbia CBC will be on Jan. 1. Call Bob Reistroffer, 636-5125.
