Elk Briefs: Season runs Saturday through Nov. 17

The modern-firearm season for elk runs Saturday through Nov. 17 in most game management units throughout Western Washington.
It’s one day longer than in recent years.
David Anderson, WDFW wildlife biologist, noted that elk hunters in Southwest Washington generally have one of the highest success rates in the state.
“Conditions are looking pretty good this year,” Anderson said. “We didn’t have a severe winter and the recent snowfall is helping to move elk down from the higher elevations.”
The weekend forecast calls for snow as low as 3,000 feet elevation, with 2 to 3 feet falling at higher elevations.
Modern firearms use prohibited in Stella game management unit 504
Some hunters appear to be unaware of the firearms restriction in the Stella game management unit 504, according to the Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The Stella unit surrounds Longview.
New regulations this year have changed Stella from bull-only to include antlerless harvest as well. However, the use of modern firearms is still prohibited in this area, which is designated as a “firearm-restricted area” on page 67 of the 2009-10 Big Game pamphlet. Residents have suggested that some scouting hunters they have encountered are not aware of this restriction.
