Prep Roundup (Nov. 6): No. 10 Comets crush Ocosta; Mules bow out

WESTPORT, Wash. — Logan Scrabeck scored a pair of touchdowns, and Naselle did all of its scoring in the first half in a 39-6 rout of Ocosta here Thursday in the Pacific 2B League football finale for both teams.
The 10th-ranked Comets (9-1, 5-1 league) finished second in the Pacific 2B. They play fourth-ranked Tacoma Baptist (9-0) on Nov. 14 at Curtis High School in Tacoma in a Class 2B state playoff game.
Naselle exploded for 23 points in the first quarter and added a pair of touchdowns in the second. Head coach Jeff Eaton began substituting heavily midway through the second quarter.
Scrabeck scored on a 4-yard touchdown run and returned an interception 27 yards for a score. Nathan Carlson added a 51-yard touchdown run and had 106 of the Comets’ 264 yards rushing.
Austin Burkhalter scored on an 11-yard run and Alan Erickson added a 1-yard touchdown plunge.
Erickson, Robert Eaton (nine tackles, one sack, one tackle-for-loss) and Jesus Martinez (two fumble recoveries) were defensive standouts for Naselle.
Mossy ends Mules’ run
CATHLAMET — Mossyrock rallied in the fourth quarter to knock off Wahkiakum 22-12 in a Central 2B League football game Thursday night.
The Vikings’ victory means they’ll play South Bend in a district playoff game Tuesday. Wahkiakum needed to beat Mossy to keep its season alive.
The Mules trailed 8-6 entering the fourth quarter and led 12-8 with 10:54 remaining. But the Vikings scored three minutes later to take the lead and added an insurance TD to eliminate the Mules.
No further details were reported before Thursday’s press time.
VOLLEYBALL
MM advances at district
TUMWATER — Mark Morris needed one set to adjust and cruised to a 26-28, 25-17, 25-23, 25-21 victory over River Ridge here Thursday in the opening round of the Southwest 2A District volleyball tournament.
The 12th-ranked Monarchs (13-2) can clinch a state berth if they beat seventh-ranked Tumwater at 11 a.m. here Saturday in a semifinal match.
Against River Ridge, MM found itself “in a little tussle,” said head coach Lisa Verage.
“We were pretty tight in that first game. We were not playing our own (style),” she added. “The Hawks did a good job and stayed scrappy. In the second game, we served a lot better and benefitted from some of their unforced errors.
“We fought hard,” Verage said. “We weren’t quite in sync the whole evening, but we came through with the victory.”
Shantelle Savage and Shawna Smith were strong in all three phases on Thursday. Savage served 10 points, smacked 13 kills and had 20 digs, while Smith had eight points, nine kills and 20 digs.
Danielle Gilchrist added nine points and 34 assists, Kinzi Williams had 11 kills, Jill Isaacson had 17 digs, and Alesha Schulz 11 digs.
Jills top Centralia in five
TUMWATER — R.A. Long played well in a first-round loss to Evergreen 2A Conference champion Black Hills, but bounced back to knock off Centralia in five games to stay alive in the Southwest 2A District volleyball tournament at Tumwater High School on Thursday.
The Lumberjills lost in three straight games to Black Hills 25-14, 25-13, 25-21, then managed to survive an up-and-down performance in a 26-24, 25-19, 18-25, 20-25, 15-11 win over Centralia in a loser-out match.
RAL will meet the loser of the Mark Morris-Tumwater semifinal at 1 p.m. Saturday for a state berth.
Against Centralia, Kylee McGeary was a serving machine with 23 points. Katie Sarsyz (10 kills, three blocks), Rachel Morrow (eight kills, eight blocks), Aryn Aston (seven kills) and Hannah Johnson (18 assists, six blocks) also played well for the Jills.
“The scores don’t show it, but we played a good, composed match against Black Hills,” RAL coach Jennifer Hefley said. “Against Centralia, we lost our composure and had a lot of ups and downs. Luckily we pulled through.”
Bekah Spurgeon and Miranda Wilson were defensive standouts for the Jills.
CR moves into finals
CASTLE ROCK — Seventh-ranked Castle Rock had little trouble advancing to the championship match after sweeping Rainier, Wash., and Onalaska in the opening rounds of the Southwest 1A District volleyball tournament on Wednesday.
The Rockets play 10th-ranked Montesano in the district title match at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Castle Rock. Montesano advanced to the championship after defeating Kalama in the quarterfinals and La Center in the semifinals.
Castle Rock opened district play with a 25-15, 25-5, 25-14 sweep of Rainier, Wash., followed by a 25-15, 25-16, 25-10 win over Onalaska in the semis.
Tierney Uhlenkott had a solid all-around match for the Rockets against Rainier with 17 kills, five stuff blocks and 19 service points, including nine aces. Heather Beck added 10 kills and three blocks, and Maddi Seidl dished 26 assists and served nine points.
In the win over Onalaska, Macee Utecht had eight kills, six digs and served eight points, Charlie Hamilton added eight kills and two stuff blocks, Megan Moore had 10 digs and served 10 points, and Ellie Halladay chipped in six digs and nine points with five aces.
Chinooks alive at district
MONTESANO — Kalama won two of three matches and remains alive in the consolation bracket after the opening rounds of the Southwest 1A District volleyball tournament on Wednesday.
Kalama plays Onalaska in a loser-out match at 11 a.m. Saturday at Castle Rock, with the winner to meet the winner of the La Center-Stevenson match for the district’s third berth to state at 1 p.m.
The Chinooks opened with a 25-15, 25-15, 25-17 sweep of Forks in the district tournament play-in game. Kalama followed with a 25-23, 25-23, 26-24 setback to 10th-ranked Onalaska, but bounced back to eliminate Rochester 25-19, 25-17, 23-25, 25-22.
Chelsea Rinard had 13 kills, Sam Boatman made 21 digs and Jodi Vossen added 14 in the win over Forks. Maggi Aschoff had nine kills and six stuff blocks, and Haley Bellows made 19 assists in the loss to Montesano.
Rinard had 13 kills and Erika Freeman made 26 assists and nine kills in the victory over Rochester.
SOCCER
United falls to Montesano
KALAMA — Montesano netted the match-winning goal in the first minute, and added five more to claim a 6-0 victory over Toledo/Winlock United in the Southwest 1A District girls soccer title match on Thursday.
Despite the loss, United takes the district’s second berth into next week’s 1A state playoffs. United is tentatively slated to play Seattle Academy at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila on Tuesday.
“We never seemed to get on track after they scored the first goal,” T/W coach Horst Malunat said. “It was 2-0 at halftime and until the final 15 minutes when we gave them a questionable penalty kick.”
