Talking Business: Old hand at teriyaki opens new place

Sun Arnold was ready for a change after working for 13 years at Minami’s Teriyaki in Longview, but she didn’t venture far. Arnold opened her own restaurant — Sun’s Teriyaki — Aug. 10 in West Kelso.
“Teriyaki is what I know,” she said.
She opened Sun’s Teriyaki in the building that housed Lee’s Orient Express. The building, which had been vacant for several months, needed a good scrubbing before she could open, Arnold said.
“It took three weeks to clean the inside and outside,” she said. “We worked 12, 13 hours a day.”
Even now that it’s up and running, Arnold said she’s still putting in long hours, including weekend trips to Portland and Tacoma for supplies. Her 12-hour work days include time helping customers and overseeing food preparation for the 26-seat restaurant.
“I have enough experience as a waitress, so I know exactly how things go,” she said.
Her menu includes teriyaki chicken, beef, pork and prawns as well as yaki soba, gyoza, beef ribs and egg rolls. Arnold said she makes all of the sauces.
“I don’t measure, I just mix it up,” she said. “That’s the way I’ve cooked all my life.”
Arnold, who has three employees, said she plans to expand her business to include espresso. The building already has a drive-up window for take-out.
Sun’s Teriyaki is at 114 First Ave. N.W., Kelso. Hours are 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. The phone number is (360) 423-3960.
If your floors could talk ...
Marcia Magnuson has added something new to her If Your Walls Could Talk business.
“I now do writing on floors for wedding receptions, and I have done two so far,” she said.
Magnuson launched her home-based business, which specializes in interior design, in March. She uses a Cricut Expression machine, which can cut letters and shapes out of vinyl, cardboard and other material.
Magnuson also conducts one-on-one and group classes at If Your Walls Could Talk, at 290 Ranch Road in Rose Valley. Call 425-8567 for more information.
