July 5 Letters to the Editor

What’s wrong with this?

Recent headlines featured Michael Jackson’s final days, while in the righthand corner was the headline that should wake up America. We will face momentous changes with the government passing the recent legislation about pollution.

Granted, we all want purer air; however, it should be pointed out that such legislation may mean some of our largest contributors to our economy will be forced out of business because of unrealistic requirements and not being part and parcel of making more reasonable and realistic solutions.

Visitors were impressed

I would like to thank the Cowlitz County Museum director for his extra time in showing out-of-state visitors the museum.

They were impressed with the amount of water in the area as seen in the flood exhibit. One commented that it was unusual to find such a high calibre museum in such a small town.

Busy with meetings

It’s been a while since I have written any letters. I have been busy with meetings and with my service club. I was asked to be the secretary of the club; it is a lot of work, I enjoy it. One of my friends asked if my pen was broken.

People are always telling me information or their opinions on what is happening in this community — a lot of the stuff is in confidence. I have many different subjects in this letter. It is impossible to write about everything that goes on in this community/nation. Someone who is new to our community and is leaving, told me that this community is hard to change.

I am amazed and surprised at people in this community running over tree limbs and boards of all kinds. Nobody stops to pick them up. I picked up a big piece of plywood and took it home. I just watch people drive over them.

I am at many meetings during the month. In some of these meetings it takes the chairman 30 minutes to catch these folks up. It drives me crazy. The meeting is almost over, and the group is working on major decisions.

That youth/link gym is a great addition to our community. The folks that put their time and money in the place — great job. I accept the gentleman’s apology in his last letter; it is always interesting to me when people discover new information. It happens to me all the time.

Where is Obama taking us?

Am I the only one who is concerned about the direction the current occupant of the White House is taking the country? I was born in the middle of the great depression in the first term of FDR and, including him, have lived under the administration of 13 presidents of various political beliefs and agendas, some who were good for the country and some not so good.

In my opinion, the current president is the least experienced and most ill-prepared of all who have gone before him, and I wonder just where these “changes” he has promised are going to take us. It seems to me that, instead of taking the country forward, he is headed backward — i.e., the government takeover of private enterprises, the mass bailouts and the creation of no less that 18 “czars” to control every facet of society who are answerable to him only. Are we going to become a “nanny” state with big brother controlling our lives and limiting our individual freedoms?

Try to recall what you learned about feudalism, that system that had a king, czar or emperor surrounded by princes, dukes, barons, counts and everybody else, but no middle class. That type of government has taken many forms under many names over the years in places like Germany, Russia, Italy, Japan, China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Burma and Venezuela. Is this what we want for America?
