A fatal one-car crash in the Knappa area closed down Highway 30 for about two hours early Monday morning, according to the Oregon State Police.
Robert James Rankin, 21, of Astoria was eastbound on Hillcrest Loop and failed to handle a curve, sending his 2009 Toyota Tacoma pickup smashing through a guardrail and airborne down a 50 foot-embankment. It rolled and came to a rest on its driver’s side on Highway 30, according to OSP.
Rankin was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident, reported at 12:03 a.m., remains under investigation.
