Christmas Wishes: Readers share what their hearts most desire
Sunday, December 21, 2008 12:16 AM PST
By Amy M.E. Fischer
What is your greatest wish? We asked our readers to tell us what they would ask for if they got one wish in exchange for giving up their Christmas presents this year and next year.
Several local schools also posed the question to students as a writing assignment.
The answers ranged from imaginative, silly and funny to heartfelt, poignant and thought provoking.
Read on for a glimpse at the desires of your children, neighbors and fellow citizens this holiday season.
Tammy Roberts, 41, of Silver Lake
I would like my son along with many others win their fight against heroin. My son has gone through rehabs and detox; heroin is one of the toughest drugs habits to kick.
The child that was once so innocent, full of hopes and dreams is still inside these addicts struggling for a way out. With the right help, support, and time, they can and will find their way again.
Kelin Ray, 21, Iraq (Longview resident)
If I could, I would give up all my care packages to be home for Christmas.
James Miller, Castle Rock Police Reserve
My wish would be for everybody to look around and see what they can do for someone in need and to just quit being so angry. People seem to be more angry than ever these days, and that does not help yourself or anyone else.
My wish is for everybody once a day for the rest of your life to do something nice for a stranger, whether it is to let them in your lane while driving or holding a door open, lending change to someone in line at the store, who just happens to be a little short that day, spending time volunteering in the community, helping your neighbor with a chore, anything at all, just do it.
Kimberly Bailey, 46, of Kalama
I would give up any and all presents if I could have my husband who is stationed in Iraq home with me and our family for the holidays.
Tia Heidler, 28, Longview
I would give up ALL my Christmas presents for one wish. My wish would be for my 18 month old son, Kaison, to be 100% healed and to have his twin brother Kwynn back.
Kaison has Microcephaly, Cerebral Palsy, seizures, feeding issues, and hearing and vision impairments. All of these disabilities are due to a twin-to-twin transfusion while I was pregnant. We lost the other baby, Kwynn, when I was 27 weeks pregnant.
My wish is for every mom to appreciate what they have and realize how lucky they are. We feel blessed every day that we have Kaison, regardless of all his medical issues.
Kaison will never be like a normal child, but he sure knows how to love like one. He has taught us so much about life in the short time he has been here. He has taught us about what is really important. He has taught us about patience, how to love unconditionally, appreciation, not to rush through life, to acknowledge the little things our children do... not just the big, how to smile, how to cry and much, much more. Some may not see Kaison as a blessing, but I sure do!
Stephanie Smith, 25, Longview
If I could give up all my Christmas presents this year and next year in exchange for one wish it would be me and my husband can have a baby. We have been trying for couple years now with no luck. We really want a baby more then anything in the world.
Linda Beattie Inlow, Longview
To have a retroactive cure for all forms of dementia, especially Alzheimer’s, so I could have my dad back.
Matt Schlecht, 33, Longview
If I could give up all of this year’s gifts and next year’s gifts for just one wish, I would wish that my mother-in-law was a little nicer to me.
Kyle Sawyer, 45, Longview
First, I wish my brother didn’t have pancreatic cancer anymore. Secondly, my son had a birth defect called speech apraxia. This mean his speech comes out garbled most of the time so you can’t understand him. This is very hard on him and both his parents. So my wish would be that my son could talk like any other 5 year old so anyone could understand him.
Darlene Parker, 46, Longview
My wish would be for my husband and I to be healthier so that maybe we could adopt a child. It has always been my wish to have a child of my own. My husband is 60 and I am not able to have a child. I just want to share my love with a child or children.
One other wish would be for my family to put aside all differences and live in harmony.
Judy Mendes, 40, Kelso
My wish would be that we could all go back to simpler times. I grew up poor, but felt I had so much sometimes. No television to distract me from playing outside until I was called in at night.
I remember when Christmas was about family and spending time together, not who got what. Where did God go in this holiday?
I would wish for family time and knowing and being friends with your neighbors.
Audrey Wiedenbeck, 50, Springfield, Ore. (former Kelso resident)
If I could give up all my Christmas presents, this year and next year, and even the year after that, I would wish that all children not be homeless or hungry and would have a place to stay and food to eat. I would wish that all homeless folk had a place to go if they wanted to, to sleep, eat, shower, messages center to help them get jobs and not be turned away. I would wish to start a chain of homes that have been fixed up by the those that are in need, throughout the country and they would be self-sufficient, drug- and alcohol-free and all children would have clothing, food and shelter.
Trish LaRocco, 42, Castle Rock
I would definitely wish that all of our service men and women would be able to be home with their families to enjoy the holidays. As a Gulf War Vet., I know how hard it is to be away from family and friends during the holidays especially. We all take for granted the freedoms and the liberties we enjoy, and we have a tendency to forget the sacrifices our military takes on every day to ensure our continued freedom and way of life. My son, who is in the Army, gets to come home this Christmas. I will cherish that time knowing that in May, when he is deployed to Iraq, it will be two years before I will get to see him again. And I am very proud and thankful for his service.
Shirleen Stanko
My only wish for this holiday season is only that my two grandsons do not have to return to Iraq or Afghanistan. They have already done two tours there and that is enough.
Dwight Dunn, 37, Kelso
If I had one wish for Christmas, it would be to have a job to help my dad and brother out. I have been out of work for 2 1/2 years now. In that time I have lost my mom and seen my dad through a heart attack, and I have fallen into debt.
I sometimes feel like I am a burden on them. I want to go back to work to help pay the household bills and feel better about life. This is my one and only wish. I don’t know if it is selfish but there it is. I would give all I have to help them out.
Karinsa Viramontes, 36, Longview
I would give up all my presents from Christmas’s past and present for a cure for my son’s cancer. I would do more than give up gifts, I would be willing to do whatever it takes and give up everything material just for this one wish.
I don’t know what parent wouldn’t do what it takes for their child.

Casey, third grade, Kelso
The most wonderful thing about Christmas is giving away toys to others. I would love to give away my gifts away for one wish. My one wish would be for no one to die on our loving earth. Because it’s very sad to see or hear about people dying. I feel very terrible for those people that passed away. I wish that had never happened. I hate the feeling of sadness.
Betsaida, third grade, Kelso
I would really wish that the people would get food for the poor people, because I heard that poor people don’t have food for their families. For example, some schools can put cups so people can bring money and put it in the cup. When the cup is full, the Army can give it to the poor people. Once the poor people have money for their family, they will have a wonderful life.

I would love to see two things happen. One is for a Homeless shelter big enough to house all that need a room. and secondly a separate building for handicapped people who are disabled to use as a homeless shelter no stairs to walk up as a requirerment to stay at the shelter. Everyone deservers a warm place to lay their heads on christmas morning. Just remember where Jesus had to lay his head the day of his birth. God bless his soul! Maybe one day my wish will come true. I know when I pass on I will donate all I have to go to this cause. Merry Christmas to all! "
