TACOMA, Wash. — A new middle school in Tacoma will be called First Creek, after a tributary on the Puyallup River where there was a tribal village.

The school board said it couldn’t consider the suggestion of naming the school after Barack Obama because he hasn’t been president yet.

The Tacoma News Tribune reports other names considered Thursday were civil rights leader Coretta Scott King and candy maker and former school board member Fred Haley.

" So they only name schools after someone who has been a president? Todd Beamer wasn't president and there is a school named after him..... "

" Beamer High School is in the Federal Way district, not Tacoma. Tacoma has a Lincoln and a Wilson that I know of and probably more presidents. The Obama idea was dumb from the start. "

" Yeah, I know that TBB, my point is the school is named after someone who wasn't president. Why is Obama a dumb idea? Because he is a Democrat, or because he is black? "

" Realist,

What they were saying is that they don't consider Presidents until they have taken office. And Obama hasn't really done anything of note to date except get elected.

I think Haley would have been a great choice. Far to often local history is overlooked for celebrity. "

" Government buildings should not be named after living people. Once dead, we have enough information to decide if they are worthy the recognition. Just being the first "African American" (I hate the PC stuff) President doesn't earn that right (yet anyway). "

" Realist, it's a dumb idea because HE HASN'T BEEN PRESIDENT YET! They have nothing to name him after! He hasn't done ANYTHING for the country yet. There are schools named after black people AND democrats. Martin Luther King Jr. has several schools named after him! And do I even need to say anything about how many schools have been named after democrats? Why would you even play the race card? Are you that eager for an arguement? Besides, if Obama fails like I think he will, what will the school look like? "

" So nice you can answer for TBB, Saturos. And NO I'M NOT PLAYING THE RACE CARD. I WAS SIMPLY ASKING TBB WHY IT WAS A DUMB IDEA. I don't care how many schools have been named after Dems, Repubs, Independents, whatever. Don't jump down my throat when I was only asking an obvious question. FOR THE SECOND TIME, THERE ARE PLENTY OF SCHOOLS NAMED FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T BEEN PRESIDENT (or haven't done "anything" for the Nation.) So much for asking a perfectly legitimate question. "
