Prep Roundup: Hilanders pull out OT win at Prairie

BRUSH PRAIRIE — Garrett Austin scored all 14 of his points in the fourth quarter and overtime to help Kelso pull out a 58-55 victory over Prairie here Tuesday in a nonleague boys basketball epic.
“It was a fantastic game,” Hilanders coach Joe Kinch said. “There were great plays on our end and they certainly made some great plays. Our kids were pretty resilient.”
Austin had eight points in the fourth quarter and six in overtime, making three 3-pointers in that 12-minute sequence. He also had took two key charges. At the end of regulation with the game tied, Kelso had the ball and ran a minute off the clock before running a set play and getting its shot blocked by the Falcons.
Prairie raced downcourt, and Austin took a charge at the Hilander basket with one second left.
Austin also took a charge in overtime.
Kinch praised Kelso’s “collective team defense.”
“We executed our game plan,” he added. “Our kids were very engaged in the game.”
Chad Pegg had 12 points and Riley Davis 11 for the winners (2-0), who visit Scappoose on Thursday in a contest originally scheduled at Kelso on Saturday.

Jacks drop OT thriller
ABERDEEN — An inexperienced R.A. Long squad “showed character” Tuesday in its nonleague boys basketball matchup against Aberdeen, but had no answer for Nick Siebert in a 70-64 overtime loss.
Siebert scored 12 of his 28 points in the third quarter as the Bobcats wiped out a 10-point RAL halftime lead.
“I was impressed with our effort. We’re a young team with just two seniors, and they have seven seniors back,” Lumberjacks coach Rally Wallace said. “We were down six late in the fourth quarter and came back to send it to overtime.”
RAL got the first basket of OT, but “that’s when the wheels fell off,” Wallace said.
Taylor Woodruff led the Jacks with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Ian Mahncke played well with 17 points, nine rebounds and five steals. Gavin Johnson chipped in 13 points and four assists.
RAL made 16-of-27 from the free-throw line, compared to 20-of-23 for the Bobcats.

Toutle holds off Kodiak
BATTLE GROUND — Chris Foster scored a game-high 20 points and Jeff Campbell yanked down 10 rebounds as Toutle Lake tipped off its Central 2B League campaign with a 53-43 victory over Columbia Adventist in boys basketball action Tuesday.
The Ducks (2-0, 1-0 league) built a 41-24 lead through three quarters before the Kodiak went on a 19-12 run in the fourth.
Campbell added nine points for Toutle.

Indians fall on road
SEATTLE — Toledo got off to a poor start and it cost the Indians in the end, as they dropped a 54-38 nonleague boys basketball decision to a strong University Prep team Tuesday night.
“We played them last year at our place and beat them by one or two, and we knew they had everybody coming back,” Toledo coach Scott Merzoian said. “We didn’t get off to a very good start (20-7 deficit in first quarter) and we didn’t shoot the ball well, but it was good experience going on the road against a quality team.”
David Wallace led the Indians (1-2) with 12 points and five rebounds, and Keith Askin chipped in nine points.
Merzoian praised the play of reserves Joe Jordan and Mitchell Fiecke.

Rockets win in overtime
CASTLE ROCK — Zack Gehring, Steven Horsley and Dustin Hamilton combined for 45 points as Castle Rock scored in the closing seconds of overtime to claim a 55-54 victory over Rainier in boys’ nonleague basketball on Tuesday.
Gehring, who led all scorers with 23 points, hit a pair of free throws late in the overtime to give CR a two-point lead. Hamilton, who also hit a freebie in the final minute to give the Rockets a three-point advantage, finished with 11 points.
Rainier hit a shot moments later that cut the margin to one point, but it would get no closer.
“We had a chance to win the game in overtime with a last shot in the final 10 seconds, but we came up a little short at the buzzer,” Rainier coach Joe Neill said. “It was really back and forth throughout the game, but they (the Rockets) pulled the ball out for the final two minutes and worked for a last shot.”
Horsley also netted 11 points for CR.
Brandon Cataldo had a double-double for Rainier with 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Tyler Yeoman added 13 points. Jake Drabandt chipped in 11 points, Daryl Paddock grabbed seven rebounds and Riley Tripp dished five assists.

Andrews ignites Tigers
BANKS, Ore. — Ethan Andrews exploded for 21 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead Clatskanie to a 61-51 victory over Banks in boys’ nonleague basketball on Tuesday.
Clatskanie trailed 19-15 after the first quarter, but bounced back to grab a 32-28 lead at the break and a 42-36 advantage entering the final eight minutes.
Mitch Ryan and Chris Wood added 11 points apiece for Clatskanie, with Seth White adding 10. Wood also dished four assists, and Cody Sloderbeck grabbed six rebounds and made five steals.

Winlock outsizes Chinooks
WINLOCK — Winlock used its size to its advantage as the Cardinals rolled to a 61-30 victory over Kalama in boys nonleague basketball on Tuesday.
Jordan Davis led Winlock with 18 points and 11 rebounds, with Tyler Hertz adding 16 points and seven assists. Jake Brown chipped in 12 points, and Nate Booth grabbed seven rebounds.
“We’re pretty big ... huge in fact,” Winlock coach Gary Viggers Sr. said. “I thought we had the first-game jitters and were way too keyed up, but we did a good job keeping them away from the basket.”
Winlock netted 13 points in each of the first three quarters to take a 39-25 lead into the final eight minutes.
“We won’t see anyone in our league with that kind of size this season,” Kalama coach Jody Stemkoski said. “We had a good start, but we let them penetrate to the basket because we didn’t do a good job blocking out.”
Robby Sanders and Brandon Walker led Kalama with seven points apiece.
Winlock visits Kalama for a rematch on Friday.

Whealdon shines in loss
SOUTH BEND — Jack Whealdon knocked down a game-high 21 points for Ilwaco, but the Fishermen had too many errors in a 71-62 setback to South Bend in boys nonleague basketball on Monday.
“We had too many unforced errors that led to turnovers,” Ilwaco coach Kip Meinhardt said. “They (the Indians) also scored too many points on us in the transition game.”
Kolby Kirby and Justin Short added 13 points apiece to the Ilwaco attack, and Karl Oman chipped in 12.

Ducks dunk Kodiaks
VANCOUVER — Kiana Saluni and Payton Hoff helped Toutle Lake pick up its first win of the season here Tuesday, just in time for the start of league play.
Saluni had 16 points and nine rebounds, and Hoff added 15 points, six rebounds and five steals as the Ducks beat Central 2B League newcomer Columbia Adventist 54-17.
“We seem to be getting better every game,” TL coach Larry Hoff said.
Kelsey Kent and Christian Carlson added six points apiece for the Ducks (1-2, 1-0 in league), who raced to leads of 12-2 after one quarter and 28-10 at halftime.
Toutle visits Mossyrock on Friday.

Kalama stumbles on road
ONALASKA — Onalaska steadily pulled away from Kalama en route to a 57-42 victory here Tuesday in a nonleague girls basketball game.
“We’re improving,” Chinooks coach Ron Palmer said. “That’s what we’re hoping for at this point in the season.”
Stephanie Saracoo led Kalama with 16 points and seven rebounds. Shelby Parrish was “a big spark off the bench,” Palmer said, chipping in 13 points and five rebounds.
Jenna Denton grabbed six boards, and Jessica Shagool was a defensive standout.
The Chinooks host Winlock on Thursday.

MM posts take over
CENTRALIA — Post players Kaytlin Ingman, Erica Niemi and Taybra Teeters sparked a second-half surge to help Mark Morris knock off Centralia 59-47 in a nonleague girls basketball game Tuesday.
Ingman and Niemi led MM (2-1) with 11 points apiece, and Teeters added 10.
“We came out of the locker room at halftime and did a nice job of imposing our will,” MM coach Scott Ruhland said. “We made a point to go inside on them, and all three of our posts did a nice job.”
Christy Polis “did a nice job running the point and keeping the team under control,” the first-year coach added.
MM led 31-24 at halftime, then put the Tigers away with a 16-8 run in the third.

ILWACO — Four players scored in double figures, led by sophomore Vallori Crowston’s 13 points, as Ilwaco put away Naselle 64-37 in a nonleague girls basketball game Tuesday.
Crowston completed the double-double with 11 assists. Ashley Tapio added 10 points and nine rebounds, and Alexa Wirkkala and Cameo Ulbricht scored 10 each.
Freshman Carley Kitzman also collected nine boards for the Lady Fishermen (1-0), who led 33-15 at halftime and cruised the rest of the way.

Beavers breeze to win
WOODLAND — McKenzie Heberer hit 7-of-11 shots en route to a game-high 16 points and also blocked four shots in Woodland’s 58-38 blowout of Evergreen in a nonleague girls basketball game Tuesday.
Freshman Emily Smith chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds for the Beavers (2-1), Charity Arn came off the bench to snag seven boards.
Kaitlyn Moses also played well with nine points (all in the second half), four rebounds, three steals and six reflections.

Balanced Indians top RAL
TOLEDO — Tiffany Tornow netted 13 points as every Toledo player scored in the Indians’ 65-48 victory over R.A. Long in girls nonleague basketball on Tuesday.
“Every player contributed for us,” Toledo coach Mandie Olson said. “Brittany Hope came off the bench and did a great job lighting things up for us, and Kelsey Stone had a solid all-around game.”
Stone scored eight points, grabbed nine rebounds, dished six assists and made five steals. Ashlee Coffey added nine points, and Sara Buswell came off the bench for eight points and seven rebounds.
Katie Gudgell led RAL with 12 points, with Sadie Petersen and Christina Driscoll adding eight apiece.
“We played well defensively in the first half, but we got a little overaggressive in the post in the second half,” RAL coach J.D. Ott said. “We played hard and did a good job controlling their fast break, and I also thought we did a solid job holding their leading scorers in check.”

Rockets top R.A. Long
Castle Rock controlled the lower weights and held off R.A. Long 41-25 in a nonleague wrestling dual at the Lumberdome on Tuesday.
The Rockets got wins-by-pin from Rocky Hubbard at 119, Cody Martin at 140, Zeke Lomer at 160, and Chase Alderman at 215.
Matt Payne (130), Kyler Lake (135) and Jed Lomer (171) won by decision for Castle Rock (1-0), and Travis Patrick won a matchup of state veterans by out-pointing RAL’s Cory Tran 7-3 at 125.
For R.A. Long, Arie Cottrell won by pin in the heavyweight class, Josh Johnson (112), Kyle Jones (145), Kody Cassidy (152) and Ryan Ralston (189) won by decision, and Jakob Collins won by forfeit at 103.
Castle Rock hosts Washougal tonight, while the Jacks take on Ilwaco and Astoria at Astoria on Thursday.
Hilanders crush Skyview
VANCOUVER ---- Kelso claimed eight matches by pin as the Hilanders cruised to a 64-9 victory over Skyview in Greater St. Helens 4A League wrestling on Tuesday.
“Something we strive for is to win every match by pin,” Kelso coach Bob Freund said. “We have a young group of kids who are paying attention and are willing to keep making adjustments.”
Winners by fall were Jared O’Neil (171 pounds), Todd Riffe (189), Josh Custer (215), Jordan Evald (103), Riley Miller (112), Garrett McDaniel (130), Carl Dalgleish (135) and Nathan Bullock (152). Decision winners were Elijah Moreno (285, 11-3), Tyson Connors (119, 8-5) and Curtis Gibberson (125, 9-5). Kelso also claimed a forfeit.
In girls matches at 119 pounds, Emma Destromp won 8-2, and Amber Mendoza claimed a 13-0 decision.
SWIMMING
Jacks, Monarchs go 2-1
Mark Morris and R.A. Long each went 2-1 at a four-team swim meet at Dick Mealy Memorial Pool on Tuesday.
Brian Mitchell won an individual event and helped on a winning relay as the Monarchs beat Battle Ground 131-6, Hockinson 105-47 and fell to Camas 100-70.
Colin Meharg was a standout for R.A. Long as the Jacks nipped Hockinson 59-52, beat Battle Ground 69-18 and fell to Camas 127-35.
Mitchell won the 100 backstroke in 1:06.17, and joined Seth Lonborg, Richy Arquette and Eric Botton to ace the 400 free relay in 3:49.85.
Lonborg was second in the 200 IM with a state-qualifying time of 2:17.14 and also came in second in the 100 butterfly (1:02.42).
Meharg won the 200 free in 1:59.71 and was second in the 100 free in 54.72. Also for the Jacks, Ryan Hunter was second in the 500 free (6:02.90) and Bill Davenport second in the 100 breast (1:13.35).
Both Longview schools visit Aberdeen on Friday.
Gallaher, Linn shine for Rainier
RAINIER — Allison Gallaher won two individual events, and Josh Linn won once and helped a relay to victory for Rainier in the Rainier Invitational swim meet on Tuesday.
Astoria claimed team titles in the boys and girls events. Astoria outdistanced Tillamook 375-273 in the girls meet, followed by Scappoose with 267 and Rainier 262. Astoria topped Rainier in the boys meet 349-298, followed by Tillamook with 284 and Scappoose 174.
Gallaher won the 200 individual medley (2:42.37) and 500 freestyle (6:26.34). In the boys meet, Linn was tops in the 100 freestyle (56.98), and joined Joey Cook, Jody Powell and Alex Field to claim the 200 free erlay in 1:42.76.
Field, Vince Holmsten, Powell and Cook also won the 200 medley relay in 1:56.44.
