SALEM, Ore. — Willamette women’s basketball coach Bruce Henderson collapsed from an apparent heart attack at Monday’s practice and later died, the university announced.

Henderson, 47, was in his fourth season at the Division III school in Salem. A game scheduled for Tuesday night was canceled, and the team won’t resume competition until after the holiday break.

A memorial is scheduled for Sunday in Cone Field House.

“Bruce was an amazing man with endless energy and enthusiasm. I don’t know of anyone that didn’t like Bruce,” athletic director Mark Majeski said Tuesday. “He was always laughing and made others laugh, too.”

Henderson played basketball at Willamette, graduating in 1984 with an economics degree. He returned to serve as assistant men’s basketball coach from 1990-94.

He later became an assistant women’s coach at Willamette, Portland State and Oregon State before taking the head coaching at his alma mater before the 2005-06 season.

Henderson is survived by his wife, Nikki Binnie-Henderson.
