No mention of Castle Rock

I would like to know if Castle Rock is on another planet? In the recent article on Walk 'n' Knock for last Saturday, the town was not mentioned at all. All the others in the county were mentioned. We, as a town, are very supportive of the program in helping the Lions Club food bank.

Those helping collect food were the Boy and Girl Scouts, churches, different organizations like the Eagles and the Grange, plus FFA, FBLA, Honor Society, Leadership class and International foreign club from the high school.

I personally donated $50 worth of food in October for the November Thanksgiving baskets and then put more out for the Walk 'n' Knock day.

It would be nice to see Castle Rock in the news also.

A deserving thank you

During this season of giving, as the school nurses of the Longview School District, we are aware on a daily basis of the increased need among the youngest members of our community.

As more families are faced with the high cost of health care and/or the loss of health insurance, more children are in our schools with lost, broken or outdated glasses and unmet basic health care needs.

Two organizations in our community are of tremendous assistance to us in helping children and their families. The Lions Club are an ongoing and invaluable resource to children in receiving eye exams and glasses. Their response to our requests for help are rapid and reliable.

The Children’s Community Resource Fund is, likewise, invaluable in helping children obtain assistance in meeting health care needs that would otherwise be beyond their reach. Their response is equally rapid and reliable in making the necessary money available.

This holiday season, if it is within your means to give a financial gift to these organizations, please do. They truly help achieve our goal of children being in school and ready to learn.

In addition, if you come across a Lion’s member and/or a board member of the Children’s Community Resource Fund, please pat them on the back and say “thank you” for your hard work and dedication to our children.

In God We Trust?

“There are no gods, no devils, no angels, no heaven or hell. There is only our natural world. Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds.”

These words are now on display adjacent to the Nativity scene in the rotunda of our state Capitol Building in Olympia. This is a slap in the face to the vast majority of people in this country who have faith in God, regardless of what religion they believe.

Political correctness gone awry? Yes, while this group does have the right to free speech, allowing such a blatant insult to be displayed in such a public forum is madness. In our opinion, this shows either a terrible lack of judgment or the courage to stand up for what is right on the part of our leadership. We need to recognize this for what it is. It is part of a continued attack on all people of faith. The chipping away of any reference to God. Saying happy holidays instead of Merry Christmas, displaying the Ten Commandments on public property or pledging allegiance to our flag are good examples.

We encourage every person who feels as we do to take action. There are several options of contacting the governor at www.governor.wa.gov because in the end it is her watch and the buck stops there.

All we want for Christmas is to take back our votes we cast for Gov. Chris Gregoire.

Have a wild Saturnalia

One of your readers asks (Dec. 4) what holiday we celebrate in December. Saturnalia, of course.

At least a dozen ancient peoples celebrated the winter solstice in one way or another. The Etruscans, a civilization which ruled Italy when the Romans were a mere tribe, apparently was one of these. We will know more about them if we learn how to read the thousands of inscriptions they left behind.

They seem too have taught the pre-Christian Romans how to celebrate the winter solstice, or Saturnalia. The church has controlled and censored Western scholarship for most of the last 2,000 years; it is not known for certain if pagans celebrated with orgies or if that is Christian anti-pagan slander.

It is well-documented that the church has stolen holidays from the Maya, Aztecs and Incas; it is trying to steal Passover from the Jews and re-name it Easter; it has stolen Saturnalia and, adding two days to the calendar, called it Christmas.

If you do not like this messenger, find another who knows history and he will tell you about the same thing.

Have a wild Saturnalia.

A great city

On Dec. 3, late night in the 300 block alley between 17th and 18th Avenues, someone dumped a vehicle and household stuff.

By Thursday morning the car had been completely stripped and the stuff had been picked over and taken. Evidently, the person who dumped it there didn’t care about the eyesore. Also, there is help for people in that situation, all you have to do is ask.

I’m very proud of the work that’s been done by the majority of residents here in the “Highlands.” I’d also like to thank the satellite police station and volunteers for the work they do cleaning and painting over the graffiti, and the Longview Police Department for the promptness in getting the mess cleaned up. The policewoman who oversaw the towing, literally picked up broken glass and other debris that could cause a flat. Thank you.

Thanks also to Gregg Hannon for all his help and Ken Hudson, code compliance officer. We have a great city and it takes all of us to keep it that way.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Girl merits recognition

We are the proud parents of the little girl (our smart daughter), Katherine Whitman. She was in the paper Nov. 19, then also on Channel 2 news (best coverage), and also channels 8 and 12.

My husband and I would like to thank everyone for the positive feedback. We get stopped in the stores. People just want to say hi and to meet her. Katherine definitely deserves recognition help saving her little brother Kurtis.
