TACOMA — Justin Aune scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 1:10 left, then intercepted a pass on Wishkah Valley's final possession as LaCrosse-Washtucna-Kahlotus rallied for a wild, 64-62 win and the Washington Class 1B title on Saturday night.
Trailing 62-58, the Tigercats held Wishkah Valley on fourth-and-1 at the LWK 29 with 2:22 left. Aune then hit Cody Bennett on a 54-yard pass and three plays later, Aune plowed in from the 1.
Wishkah Valley started its final drive at its own 40, but Nick Marsh was intercepted by Aune at the Tigercats' 26 with 58 seconds left. It was Marsh's only miscue of the night, as he hit 10 of 16 passes for 257 yards and four touchdowns.
The Loggers (10-2) trailed 46-22 late in the first half, but rallied to take a 54-52 lead on Johnny Boggs' 47-yard punt return score late in the third quarter. Aune later scored from 2 yards to retake the lead, but Marsh hit Seth Nelson on a 39-yard scoring pass with 11 minutes left.
LWK (13-0) was led by Garrett Blauert, who tied a state championship game record with 38 carries for 295 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Aune added 103 yards and Cody Bennett had 96 yards rushing as the Tigercats had 587 total yards. Blauert had 203 yards and all four of his touchdowns in the first half.
Wishkah Valley also set the championship game record for most points in a losing effort.
LWK previously won five state titles as just LaCrosse-Washtucna. This is the first season playing in combination with Kahlotus.
