Prep Roundup: Chinooks cruise past Beavers

KALAMA — Brandon Walker turned in a solid all-around effort with a game-high 17 points, five rebounds and five steals as Kalama opened its season with a 61-41 thrashing of Woodland in nonleague boys basketball action Thursday.

“For the first game, the kids came out pretty aggressive and put good pressure on them defensively,” Kalama coach Jody Stemkoski said. “We still missed some easy buckets, but for the first game, we got the cobwebs out and played well all-around.”

Robby Sanders added 12 points and Ryan Chiodo had nine points and six rebounds for the Chinooks. Trevor Hurn led the Beavers (0-2) with 14 points.

Tigers lock down Gulls

CLATSKANIE — Chris Wood had 14 points and nine rebounds, and post man Ethan Andrews added a double-double (11 points, 10 boards) as Clatskanie opened its season with a 53-37 win over Seaside in a nonleague boys basketball game Thursday.

The Tigers forced 12 turnovers in the second quarter alone and outscored the Seagulls 18-1 to take command.

“We finally started locking down our traps in the second quarter and started forcing some turnovers,” Tigers coach Keith Sloderbeck said. “We did a good job defensively.”

K.C. Taylor had a solid game for Clatskanie with eight points, eight rebounds and six assists, and Sloderbeck praised the overall offensive performance of point guard Mitch Ryan.

Oman leads Ilwaco

ILWACO — Ilwaco made some defensive adjustments in the second half as the Fishermen rolled to a 69-44 victory over Ocosta in nonleague boys basketball on Thursday.

Ocosta’s Kaylan Forbis netted 18 points in the first half, but the Ilwaco defense held him to six in the final 16 minutes.

“We did a good job containing his penetration to the basket,” Ilwaco coach Kip Meinhardt said. “Kolby Kirby was defending him in the first half and did a good job, but we made some jump switches in the second half to help him out.”

Karl Oman led the balanced Ilwaco attack with 18 points. Jack Whealdon added 13 points and dished eight assists, and Justin Short chipped in 12 points.

Indians take down Ducks

TOUTLE — Three Toledo players scored in double figures, led by Tiffany Tornow’s 14 points, as the Indians cruised past Toutle Lake 65-39 in a nonleague girls basketball game Thursday.

It was the season opener for the young Ducks, who wilted under Toledo’s early full-court pressure and trailed 24-9 after a quarter.

“Their press killed us in the first quarter. We are young. We had our deer-in-the-headlights look going,” TL coach Larry Hoff said.

Candi Zion and Kelsey Stone added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Indians. Kiana Saluni led Toutle with 11 points, nine rebounds and five steals, and Kelsey Kent chipped in nine points. Payton Hoff had six points, eight boards and dished five assists.

Lumberjills cage Ravens

Katie Gudgell knocked down 17 points and Sadie Petersen added 10 as R.A. Long built a huge first-quarter lead and coasted to a 62-34 victory over Terry Fox of British Columbia in nonleague girls basketball at Joe Moses Court on Thursday.

“The girls really got after it and did a good job rebounding,” RAL coach J.D. Ott said. “We grabbed 37 rebounds and forced Terry Fox into 23 turnovers. We also did a good job getting after the loose balls.”

Kelsey Craft grabbed 11 rebounds and Tirzah Coalman dished seven assists for RAL.

Tigers fall at Seaside

SEASIDE — Seaside’s Ashley Mayfield nearly outscored the entire Clatskanie lineup as the Seagulls soared to a 53-34 victory in nonleague girls basketball on Thursday.

Mayfield led all scorers with 31 points.

Ronni Villines led Clatskanie with 14 points. Tiana Hughes grabbed seven rebounds, and Maria Nolan added four rebounds and two steals.

Deaton-led Mules win

NASELLE — Shelby Deaton erupted for 21 points, 21 rebounds and five steals to lead Wahkiakum past Naselle 65-47 in a nonleague girls basketball game Wednesday night.

Halie Boyce (12 points, eight boards), Kari Schillios (10 points, seven boards) and Jordan Wirkkala (eight points, seven boards, six assists) also played well for the Mules (1-0).

Wahkiakum led 33-22 at halftime and never looked back.

Emily Green led all scorers for Naselle with 21 points and Nicole Tarabochia scored 14.
