County looking for a few good board volunteers

Cowlitz County commissioners are seeking volunteers to serve on a number of county boards and commissions:

Planning Commission: Reviews land use applications for development in unincorporated areas of the county. Expiring terms are for district one, representing the Kelso/Kalama/Woodland area, and district two, representing Longview and Lexington. Four-year term. The commission meets at 7:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month.

Board of Equalization: Deals with property tax disputes. It most frequently hears property tax appeals and complaints regarding the assessor’s determination of property value. Applicants must be knowledgeable about property values. Term of appointment is three years. The position pays $65 per day when the board meets. (This is the only position among those listed in this article to have compensation.)

Mosquito Control Board: Operates, maintains and supervises services and facilities needed to control mosquitoes. The expiring term is for the district three seat representing West Longview/Castle Rock. Two-year term.

Solid Waste Advisory Committee: Assists in development of solid waste programs. Two-year term.

Park & Recreation Advisory Committee: Advises the county on acquisition, improvement and maintenance of county parks, playgrounds and recreation facilities. Expiring terms are for district one, representing the Kelso/Kalama/Woodland area, and district three, representing West Longview and the Castle Rock area. Six-year term. The committee meets at 5:30 p.m. the second Tuesday of the month.

Yale Valley Library District Trustee: Manages and controls the district, submits a budget annually and sets the tax levy. Applicants must live in the district. Term of appointment is five years. The trustee can serve no more than two consecutive terms.

Regional Support Network Advisory Board: Reviews and makes recommendations on mental health plans, policies and programs to ensure all services are complementary and provided in an effective and efficient manner. Term of appointment is three years. The board meets at 3:30 p.m. the second Wednesday of each month.

Food Advisory Committee: Advises on matters pertaining to developing and sustaining a pro-active food advisory committee to promote and protect the health, safety, and wellbeing of the public and prevent the spread of disease by food. Three-year term. Meets quarterly — dates to be determined.

Developmental Disabilities Board: Advises the county on needs of people with developmental disabilities. Term of appointment is three years. The board meetings at 3 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of the month.

Substance Abuse Advisory Committee: Advises the county on the needs of persons who have alcohol or other drug abuse problems and the community need for substance abuse prevention programs. Three-year term. The committee meets at 3:30 p.m. the first Wednesday of each month.

Noxious Weed Control Board: Assists in educating the public about noxious weeds and their control. Applicants must have some knowledge of noxious weeds and reside in District 4 (Kalama). Term of appointment is four years. Meets the second Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Lodging Tax Advisory Committee: Advises on new lodging taxes as well tax increases, exemptions or changes in the use of tax revenue. Applicant must be involved in activities that can be funded with lodging tax revenue.

Building & Planning Advisory Council: Makes recommendations to the county commissioners, reviews the department’s work plan and its practices, guidelines and strategies.

Interviews may be held at the board’s discretion.
