A wiring problem that shut down the Lower Columbia College Web site and stymied online classes and other activities last week has been fixed, school officials said.
The problem wiring problem was unusual, and there was no backup for the faulty circuit, said LCC spokeswoman Sue Groth, explaining why it took several days to overcome the trouble.
The system was down Tuesday afternoon through Friday, though staff shut it down for a few hours during the weekend to check for problems.
“That’s why, depending on when folks checked in, they might have thought it was still down” over the weekend, Groth said.
Students were unable to participate in online classes and access student services and e-mail because of the system failure.
The school was closed Wednesday evening through Sunday for Thanksgiving holiday.
Groth said the system will likely be shut down periodically during winter break to allow staff to “make additional adjustments ... to protect against any extended shut downs in the future.”
Technicians have added a back-up wiring circuit, she said.
“They’re confident they won’t have any more problems,” Groth added.
