The Rainier City Council on Monday voted to ban parking on the east side of East Fourth Street between C and E streets and on the west side from C Street south to the first driveway. The ban makes it easier for school buses and other large vehicles to negotiate the steep street.
The parking ban will begin as soon as the signs are made and public works can put them up, the mayor said.
East Fourth is a major thoroughfare coming into Rainier from the south, and when vehicles are parked on both sides of the street, traffic is narrowly restricted, Rainier Police Chief Ralph Painter told the council.
“The neighbors thought it was a good idea,” Painter said. The council previously had instructed Painter to check with residents affected by the parking ban.
“That was one of our concerns,” Mayor Jerry Cole said after the meeting. “We wanted everyone to buy into the plan.”
