OLYMPIA — The Department of Social and Health Services reports 48,000 applications for the food stamp program in October, compared with 36,000 in September.
Officials say the increase is likely due to a tougher economy and easier rules to qualify for the Basic Food program.
A spokeswoman in Olympia, Kathy Spears, says more than 617,000 people in Washington received food stamps in October, up from 594,000 in September. That compares with about 543,000 in October of 2007.
The Eastern Washington spokesman for the agency, John Wiley, told The Tri-City Herald that funding should not be in jeopardy because the money comes from the federal government with the state picking up about half the administrative costs.
