It is time for CHANGE in America folks. Lets all work together in any way we can to help the new administration. It will just help us all in the long run. Even John McCain is amenable to that so don't be left behind...join in and become one great nation once again. "

Before anybody says that this is just pennies its another tax that once they get in place will continue to rise. "

El Gabilon wrote on Nov 5, 2008 4:53 PM:

" Prior to "permament" emergency services, people volunteered to serve. Perhaps taxes would go down if more people lent a hand... more builders used fire retardent materials, home owners installed sprinklers, occupants had fire alarms, and extinguishers in their apartments and homes. One possible way to solve the problem is to determine the average wage for a county, excluding the highs and the lows/\, and not pay emergency workers above it. Other factors should be things such as "what is the average number of fires per year in a community? "How often are police officers hurt on the job?" "Why can't civilians, paid on a commission basis be allowed to issue tickets?" (We have meter maids. "Do all police stations really need "riot gear", expensive quipment, swat teams, etc. Lastly do we really need all of that expensive communications equipment or could we use a "tin can and string assembly?!! "

I take the bus to work every single day in King County, as do most of my friends and co-workers, and I can guarantee you, (yes, you Kitten), none of us are "charity cases". I congratulate the majority of voters who see the need to expand public transportation as necessary to make Cowlitz County more attractive to potential businesses. "

Im_not_saying wrote on Nov 5, 2008 9:08 PM:

" CRfisherman - I seriously doubt there will ever be a next time for your fire department. It's going to be a hard time in castle rock for those in need. How that little shanty library gets more than the fire department I will never understand. I feel sorry for the first family that will lose their house, or a family member due to this levy failing. I guess you get what you pay for. Guess their self-help sections will be checked out for the forseeable future. "

Im_not_saying wrote on Nov 6, 2008 1:35 PM:

" El Gabilon - Emergency workers make more than minimum wage because there is a fiar amount of school they have to take and then to keep their certifications. Everyone from a cop to an EMT has annual training they must complete. And these are the people saving lives and putting out fires - You really think a McDonalds worker has the same amount of responsibility or training? And all the improvements you quote are now in effect - There are still kids playing with matches, people who leave newspapers piled next to cans of paint thinner, poor wiring, etc. As far as volunteers - this is not the 1950's. Employers don't let their crews leave for emergencies anymore. So basically if you are sick, or there is a house fire - It had best be after 5 pm or before 8 - otherwise you are on your own. As far as "expensive communication equipment" - In 1996 FDNY chiefs told then mayor Guliani that the radios they had were inefficient and would not work in or near large buildings. FDNY lost 343 men on 9/11. They still had the same radios, and most were lost when they could not hear the evacuate order. I suggest the next time you can, volunteer with the cowlitz chaplincy to sit and talk with these guys who tell family members their loved one has died. Now imagine doing that 342 more times and you will see why safety equipment is needed. "

It is wrong for people who don't pay taxes to vote on taxes! PERIOD! ".....That was a really and truly unethical thing to say. Every American citizen has the right to vote and express themselves.
That's why we vote and that is our right whether rich or poor or at times just like in the case of Obama's grandmother she was able to vote but day before the election she passed away but her vote counted before the death certificate was released.
WE SHOULD BE PROUD TO BE AMERICAN IN ANY SHAPE OR FORM! "

" Attention Castle Rock folks, I don't want to hear any snivelling or wineing, when your house burns or your relative has a heart attack, and does'nt survive, for the lack of EMT's not have back-up aid vehicle, or the Volunteer's Fire Dept. lack of funds to respond!! Maybe after a few incidents as such, tight, ignorant,un-educated folks might rethink a few cents on the dollar for their saftey and protection. Mean while, we here in the CR fire district all have to suffer, for the narrow minded!! "

kitten wrote on Nov 6, 2008 7:25 PM:

" Press- Did I say that people who don't pay taxes should not get to vote? No! I said they should not get to vote on raising taxes! Of course they can vote on the minor stuff like which monkey sits in the whitehouse and such. That affects them. Paying taxes affects those of us who do it! I see it being akin to us voting on a bill that only affects people in Seattle. It doesn't make sense to me for me to vote on something which I have no business in.

Sea-Gal-I never said that people that ride the bus are charity cases, simply the ones that weren't willing to pay a higher fare for their chosen mode of transportation. I have had an increase in my transportation costs, why shouldn't you? Anyone with any pride would not take offense at my point-of-view. "

We are just using our press freedom and freedon of speech and using it to the fullest of our ability.

You said people who do not pay taxxes should not vote on such related issues.

When I had turned 18 years of age I was not old enough to drink, neither was I working a full time job at that time I was in college.

I was living under my parents roof did not own a car or any property at the time either but much of our voter issues were for alcohol laws, house and property taxxes, auto laws, and other things such as that regarding work.so are whats is your thought of voting before age 21 the when we are officaily considered adults by law.
At 18 I did not care who was my president I even recall in fact that I had left that choice blank the first time.
I would say 98% of what and whoI stood behind in this general election were good choices.
The one that I have a hard time with is assisted death. i read my homework on all initiatives and many of them were costly and would take forever to earn back any revenue and over-head .
What concerns me more then anything is the local economy.
Try living in a 3rd world country you would learn fast how to love your county, city, and State and your country. "

a 2/3 vote majority, nothing gets passed unless the opposition party agrees. This works at all levels of
government, so IF, and only IF, our
politicians choose to work together, things will get done. Gregoire or Obama will not get things done unless
the Republicans agree, and Republicans will not accomplish anything unless
Democrats agree. So, stop the attacks on each other and stop acting like spoiled brats. "

Gregoire has vowed to veto any legislation that eliminates WASL. She enthusiastically proclaims her desire to work with Obama, which will ultimately mean axing NCLB, which she vehemently supports. It will be very interesting to see how she'll swing... "

I had a bad time with Initive 1000, death with dignity, or whatever they are calling it.
The part that got me was that ANYONE who has 2 doctors sign off that they will die within 6 months can ask that the "dosage" be delivered for them to take at will. My mom was told she had 6 months to live, by several doctors, and she lived 27 more months. She did her best to enjoy life to the fullest up until the last couple of weeks. I personally feel death is a process for the person dying and the friends and family that need to work through their issues, with that person. "

Many people who are "buying" things and paying taxes on those items are using my money to do it. If they don't claim an income, where do they get the money from? You guessed it, us! I think that anyone who is not a income tax paying citizen should not get to vote. "

" PatRiotic: There is nothing in the law that requires anyone to take that lethal dosage to end their life. I lost a friend of 40 years last year to prostrate cancer. He chose the time and place of his death and like so many of us did not want his family to endure along with him, the final days of terminal cancer. His family and friends were all supportive of his decision. When the quality of life diminishes to the point that one can only survive in drug filled oblivion, it is time to say good bye and do it on one's personal terms before becoming incapacitated to the point where there is no option left.
