Prep Notebook: MM's Haight named MVP; Verage nets top coach honor

Mark Morris senior outside hitter Rebecca Haight earned Most Valuable Player honors, and Lisa Verage of the Monarchs was selected Coach of the Year by her peers following a recent vote of the Greater St. Helens 2A League volleyball coaches.
Players earning first-team recognition were MM’s Danielle Gilchrist and Tara Anderson; Brittany Weiand and Marnee Clancy of R.A. Long; Hockinson’s Paige Stephens and Kiwi Sorenson; and Ridgefield’s Molly Boyle.
Second-team picks included MM’s Shantelle Savage, RAL’s Hannah Johnson and Woodland’s Staci McLendon. Honorable mention selections included RAL’s Katie Sarysz and Kaylie Dobbins, MM’s Jill Isaacson and Woodland’s Kayla Christensen.
Kelso lands two players on all-league second team
Kelso’s Thomas Gustin and Justin O’Neil earned second-team honors for the Hilanders in football in the Greater St. Helens 4A League following a vote of the league’s coaches.
Gustin was voted to the defensive line and O’Neil was on the offensive line.
First-team selections were Skyview running back Duke Kelly, tight end Jason Lienweber, offensive lineman Conner Bockmier, kicker/punter Nick Phillips, defensive lineman Angel Occasio, linebacker Alec Osborn and defensive back Ian Zarosinski; Heritage receiver Ashton Clark, offensive lineman Steven Forgette, linebacker Mike McDonald and defensive back Tyree Shired; Battle Ground running back/defensive back John Simon, offensive lineman Zane Shaut, kicker Riku Wanzek and defensive lineman David Kalamafoni; Mountain View offensive lineman Michael Krafsig, defensive lineman Jack Tudela, linebacker Michael Gaspar and defensive back Cameron Pape; and Evergreen receiver/kick returner Kyrell Hudson, offensive lineman Ashton Miller and defensive back Ron Briggs.
Heritage quarterback Garrett Grayson was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Year, and Evergreen lineman Ashton Miller was the Defensive Player of the Year. Skyview’s Steve Kizer was named the league’s Coach of the Year.
MM, RAL land players on GSHL 2A soccer first team
Three players from Mark Morris and one from R.A. Long were named to the all-Greater St. Helens 2A League first-team for girls soccer after a recent vote of the league’s coaches.
Midfielders Colby Pittman, Alyssa Marre and forward Christy Polis earned first-team nods for MM, along with RAL midfielder Danielle Small. Also named to the first-team were Hockinson midfielder/forward Michelle Haagen, forward Brittany Johnson and goalie Ashley Haden; and Ridgefield midfielder/forward Morgan Atchley, midfielder Amanda Coulimore, forward Crystal VanLaeken and defender Katie Daniels.
Second-team players included RAL sweeper Taylor Pitts and defender Liz Johnson. Honorable mention selections included RAL defenders Alison Kolberg and Christina McDonald, goalie Alia Mauro and Breanna Stanaway; MM forward Rayna Murphy, defender Kelci DuBois, sweeper Sam Tilton and midfielder Molly Holway; and Woodland midfielder Rachelle Olson and defender Jerika Burton.
Hockinson grabbed both the Offensive and Defensive Most Valuable Player awards. Forward Torri Sitzman earned the offensive nod, and defender Emily Allison was named the top defender. Ridgefield’s Nicole Derryberry was named Coach of the Year.
Woodland’s O’Malley, Pilot on GSHL 2A golf first team
Woodland golfers Dakota O’Malley and John-Michael Pilot were named to the first-team for Greater St. Helens 2A League golf following a polling of the league’s coaches.
Also named to the first-team were Hockinson’s Gerrit Chambers, Connor O’Neill of Washougal and Ridgefield’s Chris Devore and Caleb Dillingham.
Second-team picks included Sean Pederson, Trevor Scott, Cameron Ford and Luxis Lee of Mark Morris, Shane Oliva of R.A. Long, and Woodland’s Tegan Winters.
Honorable mention selections included MM’s Daniel Jodrey and Tim O’Hollaren, and Woodland’s Jordan Ditzler.
MM lands five on GSHL cross country first team
Mark Morris landed a combined five players on the first-team to dominate the coach’s recent balloting for the Greater St. Helens 2A League cross country team.
Chase Bussing, Nate Starr and Brandon Kuljis earned first-team nods for the boys, and Hayley Brusewitz and Joanna Feeney were tabbed to the girls first-team.
Rounding out the first-teams were Hockinson’s Matt Porter and Dylan Croeni of Washougal for the boys, and Hockinson’s Shannon Porter, Jadyn Gourley and Ridgefield’s Sabrina Peraza for the girls.
Second-teamers included MM’s Savina Rodriguez and Allison Schneider of R.A. Long for the girls, and RAL’s Nathan Richards along with MM’s Zach Hutton, Andres Rodriguez and J.J. Jason for the boys.
Honorable mention picks included RAL’s Gray Earnest for the boys, and MM’s Julia Chun and Rachael Washington for the girls.
Pair of Lassies named to GSHL 4A volleyball team
The Kelso Lassies placed two players on the Greater St. Helens 4A League volleyball second-team, and a pair on the honorable mention squad after a recent ballot of the league’s coaches.
Second-team picks are outside hitter Crystal Nyman and setter Andrea DeRosier, and honorable mention selections are middle blockers Melanie Rider and Jenna DeRosier.
Named to the league’s first-team were Skyview outside hitters/middle blockers Devon Brown and Jenna Watson; Heritage outside hitter/middle blocker Michaela Mareva, setter Kaitlyn Tuholski and defensive specialist Alivia Fields; and Evergreen outside hitter/middle blocker Morgan Harris.
Skyview setter Leanna Ludes was named Player of the Year, and Coaches of the Year were Skyview’s Cheyanne Knight and Chelinda Dettorre of Heritage.
Davis, Mustion, Wood nab cross country honors
Kelso’s Bryce Davis, Elle Mustion and Katie Wood earned first-team honors for cross country in the Greater St. Helens 4A League after a recent vote of the league’s coaches.
Davis was joined on the boys team by Skyview’s Ryan Cavola and Jared O’Brien, Jorge Torres of Heritage, Mountain View’s Cory Boley and Cody Escott of Evergreen.
Joining Mustion and Davis on the girls team were Skyview’s Elise Yoshioka and Julie Yoshioka, Battle Ground’s Nicole Tester and Alison Litsey of Evergreen.
Skyview’s Ron Heidenrich was named the league’s Coach of the Year.
GSHL 4A soccer team includes Kelso’s Wheeler
Kelso forward Paytyn Wheeler earned first-team honors in soccer in the Greater St. Helens 4A League after a recent ballotting of the league’s coaches.
Joining Wheeler on the first-team were Skyview defender Allie Townsend, midfielder Samantha Miles and forward Ileanna Zaballa; Battle Ground defender Kindra Caseday and forward Cassie Black; Mountain View defenders Stephanie Flower, Rachel Wilmoth and midfielders Eva Everett and Avery Anderson; and Heritage defender Stephanie Harold and midfielder Amber Myers.
Second-teamers included Kelso’s Cassy Tieg, and Leilani Barker was named to the honorable mention team.
Natalie Harold of Heritage was named Defensive Player of the Year, and Aubri Squires of Battle Ground was tabbed Offensive Player of the Year. Skyview’s Rob Owskey and Battle Ground’s J.J. Klaus shared Coach of the Year honors.
Scalesse, Kohler named to GSHL 4A golf second team
Kelso golfers Travis Kohler and Adam Scalesse earned second-team honors in golf for the Greater St. Helens 4A League in a recent vote of the league’s coaches.
First-team selections were Skyview’s Nick Long and Andrew White, Mountain View’s Ethan Herrema and Matt Hartley, and Evergreen’s Josh Vizcaino.
Skyview’s Andy Long was named Player of the Year, and Eric Eastes of Skyview was named Coach of the Year.
Patterson earns GSHL 4A first-team swim honors
Kelso’s Jessica Patterson was named to the first-team in the 100 butterfly for the Greater St. Helens 4A League after a vote of the league’s coaches.
Mountain View dominated the first-team selections led by Peggy Liang (200 individual medley, 100 freestyle), Haley Holboke (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle) and Christine Rice (50 freestyle), along with Battle Ground’s Bethany Hoopman (100 backstroke) and Skyview’s Laura Merrett (100 breaststroke).
Second-teamers included Patterson (100 backstroke) and Shelby Metzger (500 freestyle).
Mountain View’s Peggy Liang was named Swimmer of the Year.
Kelso’s Rambo-Dumke duo are second-team picks
The Kelso doubles pairing of Zach Dumke and Joel Rambo were named to the second-team of the Greater St. Helens 4A League for boys tennis in a recent polling of the league’s coaches.
First-teamers selected were Skyview’s Kent Andreasen, Mountain View’s Michael Blevins and Jeff Lowndes of Heritage in singles, and Mountain View’s Aaron Blevins-Jack Wang and Jeff Garmire-Dean Beyer along with Skyview’s Bryce Church-Nigel Lyons in doubles.
Skyview’s Kent Andreasen and Mountain View’s Michael Blevins were named co-Players of the Year.
Six Toledo players named to Evergreen grid squad
A half-dozen Toledo players earned first-team honors for football from the SWW 1A League Evergreen Division after a recent vote of the league’s coaches.
Toledo’s first-teamers are running back/defensive back Mike White, receivers D.J. Herbert and Jace Catlin, quarterback Andrew Blair, offensive lineman Preston Tomes and defensive lineman Cory Pond.
Other first-team selections are Montesano offensive/defensive linemen Ira Alefteras and Derek Jensen, linebackers Kale Trimble and Ryan Campbell, running back Frank Carpenter, tight end Alex McNealley and defensive back Gabe Thompson; Forks offensive/defensive lineman Brett Rigby, offensive lineman Tanner House, linebacker Colby Gagnon, defensive back Brien Jaksha and kicker Sean Weeks; Rainier running back/defensive back Kyle North, receiver Kevin O’Leary, offensive lineman Shane Cordova and defensive lineman Eric Loridier; Tenino punter Josh Moss; and Rochester defensive back Jerry Mancuso.
Honorable mention picks included Toledo offensive linemen Zach Barber and offensive line/kicker Dean Lampert, defensive lineman Ike Goebel, linebackers Mitch Fiecke, Preston Tomes and Johnny Earls, and defensive back Brycen Holmes; and Winlock offensive lineman Nick Hoven, running backs Travis McCarthy and Mike Ayon, punter Tyler Diamond, linebackers Travis McCarthy and Matt Hoven, and defensive backs Nick Nowak and Dalton Sturza.
Luke Dixon of Forks was named the league’s Most Valuable Player. Montesano players Taylor Church and Alex McNealley were named Offensive and Defensive MVPs, respectively, and Montesano’s Terry Jensen was named Coach of the Year.
United places four on SWW 1A Evergreen first team
Four players from Toledo-Winlock United were selected to the SWW 1A League Evergreen Division first-team for girls soccer following a recent balloting of the league’s coaches.
United first-teamers selected were defender Molly Deming, midfielder Ashlee Coffey, and forwards Candi Zion and Tiffany Tornow.
Also named to the first-team were goalkeeper Sami Wilson, defender Kristen Lantau and midfielder Lacey Morris of Rock-ON (a combined team from Mossyrock and Onaslaska); Montesano midfielders Allison Benedict, Sadie Bennett and forward Sydney Bullington; Rochester defender Kaitlin McCann; and Tenino defender Cierra Cleeves.
Second-teamers included United’s Emma Luhn, and honorable mention picks included United’s Amanda Suter, Brittney Hope, Alise Beamen, Carmen Canedo, Jolaina Crawford and Leah Lucas.
Montesano dominated the league’s major awards. Ali Ohashi was named Player of the Year, Mikayla Shumate was tabbed Offensive Player of the Year, and Becca Lane earned Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Allen Anderson of Rock-ON was named the league’s Coach of the Year.
Three Toledo players make second-team all-league
Toledo didn’t have any first-team selections, but the Indians had a trio of players named to the second-team for volleyball in the SWW 1A League’s Evergreen Division after a vote of the league’s coaches.
First-team selections were Onalaska’s Samantha Gordon, Amber Durand and Mandy Reynoldson, Rainier, Wash., players Kristin Schoenherr and Mariah Maib, and Montesano’s Courtney Lloyd.
Second-teamers included Toledo’s Kelsey Stone and Hillary Roeder, and Sarah Jordan of Toledo was named to the honorable mention team.
Aubree Plockington of Montesano was named the league’s Most Valuable Player, and Debbie Gibson of Montesano was selected as Coach of the Year.
Shirley, See, Erickson and Burkhalter on first team
Naselle’s Mike Shirley, Gabe See, Alan Erickson and Austin Burkhalter have been named to the football first-team for the Pacific 2B League after a recent vote of the league’s coaches.
Shirley was named to both the offense and defensive lines, See was tabbed as a receiver, Erickson at linebacker and Burkhalter as a defensive back.
Also named to the first-team were Willapa Valley’s Matt Friese (quarterback/defensive back), Tony Luoma (running back/kicker), Jake Gerow (offensive line/linebacker) and Will Rockett (offensive line); North Beach players Jamaal Lind (running back), Russell Alfaro (receiver), Andy Smith (offensive line) and Nick Poplin (defensive line); Raymond defensive backs Kevin Newman and Danny Xaysy, punter Roger Vongmixay and Cameron Topping; South Bend running back Zach Boyes, linebacker Myron Smith and defensive back David Lorton; Northwest Christian offensive lineman Scott Hallman and linebacker Kyle Tracht; and Ocosta defensive lineman Kyle Strode.
Honorable mention selections for Naselle were Nick Hines, Tony Fletcher, Marcus Sanchez and Tommy Rose.
Hugh Wyatt of North Beach was named the league’s Coach of the Year.
Naselle’s Leeland earns Pacific 2B volleyball nod
Naselle’s Shelby Leeland earned first-team honors for volleyball in the Pacific 2B League following a recent vote of the league’s coaches.
Rounding out the first-team were South Bend’s Delany Bisbee, Kelsey Staats and Samantha Anderson; Becca Hines, Shelby Pase and Kendall Blake of Ocosta; Tiare Barr, Northwest Christian’s Tiare Barr and Erica Edwards; and Raymond’s McKnzy Miller and Bong Khammala.
South Bend’s Theresa Mott was named the league’s Most Valuable Player, and Jackie Sanchez of South Bend was tabbed Coach of the Year.
Uhlich leads Y-C Tigers into volleyball playoffs
Former local resident Natalee Uhlich, daughter of Longview’s Rich Uhlich, led the eighth-ranked Yamhill-Carlton Tigers to a berth in the recent Oregon Class 4A Volleyball Championships.
Uhlich, a 5-foot-10 senior outside hitter, earned all-Cowapa League honorable mention honors as an outside hitter.
“Natalee is an excellent all-around player and provides additional leadership with her aggressive and loud style of play,” Y-C coach Julie McGraw said in a story that appeared in the Yamhill Valley News-Register. “Nat isn’t afraid to be heard. She communicates with everyone on the court and you know she’s got your back. We need more of our players to do that.”
Smythe resigns as Evergreen football coach
After two seasons as head coach of the Evergreen High football team in Vancouver, Tom Smythe announced his resignation so he could pursue a similar position at Lakeridge High in Lake Oswego.
Smythe coached football at Lakeridge for 17 seasons where he won a state title in 1987. He later led McNary High of Salem to a pair of state crowns in 12 seasons before taking the head coaching position at Evergreen.
“It’s unusual for me to stay two years anywhere,” Smythe said in a story that appeared in the Vancouver Columbian. “I’m a longevity guy usually. At this particular time, I’m not sure I’m the right fit at Evergreen. I told the players this is a win-win. ‘You guys are going to get somebody who fits better here, and I’m going to be in a place where I fit better.’ ”
Smythe has also been offered a job in Europe, and he’s previously coached in Austria and Finland.
The Plainsmen went 13-6 in Smythe’s two seasons, including a Class 4A Greater St. Helens League championship in 2007.
