From time to time, The Daily News sports desk offers a Top 10 list for readers to chew on. Here's a look at a few of our favorite flicks.
Best sports movies ever
10. “The Natural”: Redford can’t throw, but tell us you don’t get choked up every time you see that light burst at the end.
9. “Raging Bull”: Not exactly a typical “feel-good” sports flick, but everything about it is realistic and technically perfect.
8. “Brian’s Song”: Get out the Kleenex, ‘cuz if you don’t cry over this one, you don’t have a heart.
7. “Field of Dreams”: One of Costner’s best sports-flick performances, especially when he’s playing catch with his dad at the end. More tears!
6. “Slap Shot”: Paul Newman (R.I.P.) as a hard-nosed, hard-drinking, foul-mouthed minor league hockey player/coach. Required viewing for fans of goofball sports movies.
5. “Rocky”: C’mon, forget the sequels — all 112 of them. This was a gem. If you’re a fan of the underdog, this one always delivers.
4. “Caddyshack”: If, for nothing else, see it just for the scenes with Bill Murray as the slack-jawed greens keeper. A very quotable movie.
3. “The Longest Yard”: Burt Reynolds as a prison-team quarterback, back in his pre-“Smokey and The Bandit” days. Excellent ending.
2. “Bull Durham”: Sharp dialogue, great love scenes, solid baseball scenes ... and a wild pitcher who beans the mascot!
1. “Hoosiers”: You’ll get chills when Jimmy Chitwood tells Coach Norman Dale, “I’ll make it.” Wonderful acting and a story that makes you want to visit (or re-visit) the 1950s.
Honorable mention: "Remember the Titans;" "Bang the Drum Slowly;" "Bad News Bears;" "King Pin"
