No place for pets

Once again I am writing about pets in stores where they do not belong unless it is a pet store. When was a law passed where people could take their pets in stores? The only dog that

I know is allowed in stores is a seeing eye dog for the blind.

Nearly every place of business has some kind of food and it is no place for pets. Folks, leave your pets at home or in your car where they belong. No one likes to find pet hair on what you purchase at the store.

Is it not against health rules for animals to be in places of business where there is food? I’m sure it is still the law and, if it is, get smart and wake up, people, leave your pets at home, not in the stores.

If you must take a pet in the store with you, open up a store where you can take your pets only where you can take them to do your shopping.

U.S. held hostage

Just about everyone knows the U.S. is being held as a hostage to the OPEC oil-producing countries. We reduce our use of their oil and they threaten to reduce production to force a rise in the cost per barrel.

So here is an idea: The U.S. should sell to them a bushel of grain for the same price as a barrel of oil. Also, if the U.S. would build more refineries and stop shipping our Alaska crude to Japan to be refined, that also might help to keep prices more in line. A lot of this financial mess started when the price of fuel went up.

Centers in Longview

A recent Daily News article, quoting Gov. Chris Gregoire, and a recent letter to the editor (Oct. 30) mentioned that one of three Small Business Development Centers recently funded by the state of Washington is located in Kelso. I would like to correct that information. The SBDC is located in Longview, in space that is provided by Lower Columbia College, and it serves business owners in Cowlitz and Wahkiakum Counties. It is funded through the Small Business Administration, Washington State University, the state of Washington and Lower Columbia College.

Business owners and anyone interested in purchasing, selling or starting a business can access services ranging from financial analysis, loan packaging, educating business owners on the cause and effect relationships leading to financial distress and how to make management decisions to address the risks, along with any other general operational issue. These services are available at no charge to the business owner.

There are 26 offices statewide. Business Advisors need to go through a certification process, with the SBDC Network and, in almost all cases, bring business ownership experience, management experience and economic development experience to their respective offices.

Bothersome phone calls

I’d like to know how Chris Gregoire’s daughter and four other organizations in support of our governor obtained my unlisted phone number, which has also been added to the “do not call” list, and proceeded to call at all hours of the day with a pre-recorded message asking me to vote for Gregoire.

I pay to have an unlisted phone number and have added my number to the do-not-call list so I do not receive such calls. I thought it was against the law to solicit those who have added their number to the list and organizations are fined for violating that law.

Editor’s Note: Political solicitations are exempt from the requirements of the federal do-not-call list.

Where is the help?

I want to know who people turn to for help. You can’t go to CAP if you speak English. I know, I have tried. You can’t get help from the state if you work, aren’t on drugs, or if you speak English.

If you work to support your family and don’t live beyond your means and are trying to stay a float, who do you turn to? This town has become so caught up in our need to be politically correct that we have lost what it means to help those who try to make their way without handouts.

We, as a city, have allowed “slumlords” to over run our town and we sit back and do nothing. Why is there no place to go and report them? And please don’t tell me to contact the Housing Authority because they do nothing. Now will someone please tell me why we, as hard-working citizens, have no place to turn.

Creator is pro-life

This is in response to Amy Child’s Oct. 16 letter. Yes, God has given us the gift of free will. However, we work awfully hard in our attempts to ignore the fact that with that gift of free will comes responsibility and accountability.

Two passages in Genesis speak of us being created in the very image of God, and Jeremiah 1:5 states, “I (God) knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb.” There are also countless verses that speak of children being a gift and a blessing from God. I promise that the heart of our Creator is deeply grieved when we reject and destroy that blessing He has chosen to bestow upon us, by invoking our “rights” when we choose to abuse that gift of free will.

There is no doubt in my mind that the God of all creation is unwaveringly pro-life.

Please do not use the gift of free will from the Creator, that is, the giver of life, to justify what you do with that gift.

Change?

There’s an old sea story in the Marine Corps about a lieutenant who inspected his Marines in the field and afterward told the “Gunny” that the men smelled bad. The lieutenant suggested the solution is that they should change underwear. The Gunny responded, “Aye, aye, sir, I’ll see to it immediately!”

The Gunny went straight to the squad tent and announced, “The lieutenant thinks you guys smell bad, and wants you to change your underwear. Smith, you change with Jones, McCarthy, you change with Witkowsky, and Brown, you change with Schultz. Now get to it.”

The moral: A candidate may promise “change” in Washington, but don’t count on things smelling any better.
