LYNNWOOD, Wash. — A 17-month-old toddler climbed out of her playpen, took a bottle of methadone out of her grandmother’s purse, drank the cherry-flavored syrup and died of a drug overdose.

Snohomish County prosecutors this week charged the grandmother, 54-year-old Robin Gail Reed of Lynnwood, with manslaughter. She’s accused of negligence by leaving the methadone in her purse on the kitchen table instead of a lockbox provided for the drug.

Alison Reed died in May and detectives had to wait for toxicology tests before sending the case to prosecutors.

The Everett Herald reports Robin Reed is a recovering heroin addict who takes a methadone prescription. She’ll be arraigned Nov. 24 in Everett.

" Mole,Methodone is a painkiller that was made by the germans in WWII to replace morphine. It is now used by many heroin addicts as a replacement drug that is much less harmfull and a drug the user can still be a productive person on. Some programs use methodone to try to get people clean but in my experiance that hardly ever works. "

" Sorry Grandmother but it's not just her loss we are talking about. Through her addiction and lack of care with a heavy narcotic, her grandchild is now dead. She has a son or daughter that just lost a daughter. Her (the grandmother) loss is not the most horrific. Her lack of proper action with regard to proper care deserves a good stiff sentence. "

" Hey, aren't these medications child proof, like most medication bottles? Really, can a 17 month old really open a bottle of syrup, or did the grandmother give her it? Just wondering. "
