This year’s second cleanup of downtown Longview is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Volunteers are needed to repaint yellow curbs, weed flower beds, plant sidewalk gardens and pressure wash sidewalks on Hudson Street between 12th and 15th avenues.

Anyone who wants to participate should meet at Scoops Ice Cream Parlor, 1339 Commerce Ave., at 9 a.m., rain or shine. Please bring whatever work supplies you may have, such as tools, hoses, gloves, brooms, spades and shovels. Call (360) 423-1020 if you plan to come.

The Hidden Griddle and the Red Rooster Bakery will provide beverages and lunch for volunteers, according to downtown business builder Hank Sowerwine. Star Rentals, United Rentals, Rodda Paint, Pamsco and the city of Longview are contributing supplies and equipment for the cleanup.

In April, roughly 150 community volunteers gathered to clean downtown streets, planters, windows and sidewalks after branding consultants hired to evaluate the city’s appeal said downtown Longview looked grubby. Sowerwine said he plans to hold annual downtown cleanups the weekends before Mother’s Day and after Halloween.

" How many property owners will be there. They are the ones letting the buildings fall apart and expecting volunteers and the city to fix them. "

" If they really want to clean up downtown Longview, I suggest a couple of tons of 60% ballistic gelletin in all the right places. Just hit the reset button and start over. "
