Support United Way
I hope you will join me in contributing to the local United Way campaign. United Way of Cowlitz County makes it their business to understand the needs of our community. They have an outstanding board of directors and staff, who evaluate community programs and choose the best suited to make Cowlitz County a better place to live.
Among its many vital services, United Way of Cowlitz County supports counseling in schools for troubled children, local disaster relief and emergency food and housing. Your money is guaranteed to stay in Cowlitz and Wahkiakum Counties to help your neighbors and less than 5 percent is used for administration.
Times are difficult for many people these days. If you’re lucky enough to be in the position to help someone else, United Way of Cowlitz County is an excellent partner. For more information, check them out on the web at www.cowlitzunitedway.org or call 423-5320.

Retain representatives
Citizens of Longview, Cowlitz County, Southwest Washington and the entire state have benefitted from the competent representation of Congressman Brian Baird and Gov. Chris Gregoire. Both are experienced and dedicated public servants and should be re-elected. A few of their accomplishments are:
Baird co-founded the caucus to combat meth. He was able to get Cowlitz County designated as a High Intensity Drug Traffic Area allowing federal funds for increased local law enforcement. He obtained a $5 million grant for local schools to use to break drug addictions in our schools. He has promoted small business tax deferrals to allow businesses to expand. He was successful in making the sales tax we pay deductible on our federal tax returns.
Gregoire was instrumental in getting Cameron Glass to locate at the Port of Kalama bringing numerous family wage jobs to the county. She reduced unemployment and workers compensation taxes by $500 million to allow small business relief. She added three Small Business Development Centers, one in Kelso. She supported the Public Facility District allowing sales tax to come back to Longview for remodeling the historic Columbia Theatre.
These successful representatives need to be retained.

A flawed tax plan
I find it interesting that many Americans so eagerly support Barack Obama for president during this time of economic turmoil. Anyone who has followed Obama’s run for the presidency will note his staunch advocacy for raising the capital gains tax as well as increasing taxes on families earning more than $250,000.
This may initially look good to middle class families, but these gimmicky plans to draw in votes will only sink our already floundering economy. Why does Obama think that taxing small businesses will somehow encourage owners to hire more people as well as give existing employees higher wages? Perhaps he is too concerned with getting elected to a position he is not qualified for to worry about whether his plans will actually work.
The tax increases Obama proposes will only hurt American workers and increasing unemployment rates.
Increasing the capital gains tax will wreak havoc not only on companies that employ millions across America, but also on unsuspecting investors such as retirees, suburbanite parents and small time business owners.
Barack Obama continues to push his reckless economic plans on the American public, all the while hoping that none will see that the only change he brings comes in the form of increased financial hysteria across America.

Retain Johnson
Remember when you get to the ballot this year there’s a person who stepped up to the plate and took the job to help the people of this county when it needed to be done. Since taking that position, she has done a great job for us proving she can listen to her constituents and going that extra mile. She now loves the position and we love her in it.
I highly recommend we commend and keep such a person.
Thanks for the good work Commissioner Johnson.
Vote to keep her. Vote Kathleen Johnson.

Negative ads
Twice, in as many days, I received large, glossy mailings from the Gregoire camp that I found to be disturbing. Their negative tone and inaccuracies led me to believe one of the following must be true:
Either she just doesn’t understand Rossi’s positions or she does and blatantly spreads negative propaganda to be deceitful. This coupled with the idea that perhaps she doesn’t have enough positive things that she has done in the last four years to fill up those glossy pages? I’d sure rather hear why I should vote for someone than why I shouldn’t.
For those of you who didn’t receive these mailings, basically it is a spin on his position regarding pharmacies being required to carry emergency contraception and how women should be outraged by this. The way I understand it is that Rossi is not trying to take away anybody’s right to take this medication or carry it in their pharmacies. He is just giving the pharmacists their right to choose whether or not they carry it in their store.
I just think that makes perfect sense that we should not encourage laws that would force people to carry products in their own stores that they would rather not carry. Ironically, one of the quotes in the mailing says, “What business does Dino Rossi have imposing his views on everyone else?”

Bad apples on both sides
In response to the Oct. 23 letter from Beverly Hamlik, I’d like to inform her that the Obama sign that I chose to display in front of my home disappeared last week.
If she wasn’t so swayed by the Republican hate message, she would realize that there are a few bad apples on both sides. So please, let’s have less hate mongering.
