Retain Judge Grant

I have been a Columbia County resident for over 15 years and am employed as a police commander for a law enforcement agency in the metro area. My vote in the Circuit Court Judge, Position 3, race is for Judge Jenefer Grant.

It is important that the judicial bench represent and reflect the community as a whole. In an election year where leadership plays a crucial role, Judge Grant’s intelligence, integrity and commitment to serve all the citizens of Columbia County without bias, combined with her character, qualifications and proven experience, are above reproach.

The judicial branch is not the place to pursue a partisan, activist agenda. Judge Grant has already demonstrated her commitment to fairness and impartiality during her time on the bench. This is what is expected of our judges and I hope that the citizens of Columbia County will join me in retaining Judge Grant on Nov. 4.

A moving visit to D.C.

I recently returned from a trip to Washington, D.C., which included a very moving visit to the FDR Memorial. Franklin D. Roosevelt was an outstanding leader during a time of crisis in the United States. During his four terms as president he spoke many times with candor and encouragement to both mobilize and reassure the citizens.

I believe that it is important to elect a person of similar character to lead us through the current crises. Barack Obama demonstrates the necessary qualities more strongly than John McCain. He projects credibility, confidence and hope during this period of serious national need. This entire country needs to be inspired.

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself,” said Franklin D. Roosevelt. All citizens should have the opportunity to visit Washington, D.C., at least once. There is so much important history recognized there and much emotion stirred in the realization that personal freedom and opportunity were the prime cornerstones in the development of our Republic.

Pick your poison

Time to hold my nose again. Will either party ever give us another JFK or RWR?

One candidate is a rookie socialist senator who, like Elvis, has women fainting, the press feeling tingles up their legs and Oprah calling him “The one.” He promises he will redistribute America’s wealth and give me more since I’m retired and am not as rich as my comrades. Is this just a Chicago politician’s veiled attempt to buy my vote?

JFK’s father once jokingly sent his son a telegram: ”Don’t buy a single vote more than necessary. I’ll be darned if I’m going to pay for a landslide.” This, however, is no joke.

The other candidate (The Maverick) gambled on the surge and won, but he’s spent the last 26 years in a Congress with an approval rating now below 20 percent. Campaign finance reform backfired on him. Immigration reform included amnesty for millions of illegal aliens.

Again this election cycle I will be voting “against” one candidate not “for” one.

It’s a no-brainer

Should I vote for a liberal spending governor who, among other spending, raised our gas taxes during the year we had the highest gas prices ever?

Or, should we vote for Dino Rossi who will hold spending down and get us through the large deficit being predicted for the future?

For me this is a no-brainer.

Vote smart

Don’t be deceived by the Democratic Party. It is the Democratic Party members in the Congress who have prevented our nation from moving ahead because of their hatred for President Bush, without regard to the people of the United States.

They have accomplished nothing for our country but infect the people with their hatred, blinding the eyes of otherwise intelligent persons. The Communists said at one time that the way for them to win is to destroy the U.S. from within. That is what is being done by the Democratic Party. Other than being a very pliable puppet, Barack Obama has no ability or experience to become president. Vote for John McCain and Sarah Palin.

Proud to support Obama

There was a letter written by Norma Peters on Oct. 20 that ended with, “If you are a Christian, do not vote for Obama.” I am a Christian and I am voting for Barack Obama. I also am pro-choice.

Obama does not support partial-birth abortions. There was a bill in Illinois that he did not support because it contained language to reverse Roe vs. Wade. He later supported the bill in the Senate that had the language removed. Obama believes that it is the woman’s right to choose. The decision should be made between her and her doctor. There also are cases of rape or incest, where abortion should be allowed, or to save the life of a mother.

Obama believes in preventing unwanted pregnancies in the first place. He supports educating our young people so that they can make good choices. Obama is a good family man and a committed Christian. Christ told us not to judge and to love one another. We need to be tolerant of all people and to respect each other, even when we disagree.

Barack Obama loves our country and will be all inclusive. He will honor all religions. That is what America is all about. I proudly support Barack Obama.

Make a difference

Our city as much as any other has had to endure a failed economic strategy. Our manufacturing base is tasked and diminished and our neighbors and friends are still holding on to the American dream despite their difficulties.

We have good and sincere people all around us with differing views how to fix this mess. We stand as mothers, fathers, sons and daughters in our joined struggle for democracy. I will not say who to vote for at this juncture, but please vote. Vote in honor of those who came before us, vote in appreciation of those we have and vote for the promise of the next generation.

This is our nation and, be either Democrat or Republican, it is as much ours to build or disregard and destroy. Please vote and make a difference.
