RIDGEFIELD — The defense never rested for Mark Morris on Friday, as the Monarchs limited Ridgefield to 88 yards total offense in a 24-7 victory over the Spudders in Greater St. Helens 2A League football action.
Mark Morris (6-1, 3-0 league) travels to Hockinson (5-2, 3-0 league) next Friday to determine the GSHL champion.
“It wasn’t our best game, but we pulled one out,” MM coach Shawn Perkins said. “We need to really step up our play for our upcoming game. It’ll be a fun one.”
The Monarchs scored all of their points in the first half, with Braydon Poole (2 yards), Nam Le (6 yards) and Jeremy Wolf (11 yards) rushing for touchdowns. Wolf ran in all three two-point conversions.
The Spudders’ lone score, also in the first half, came on a botched punt that was recovered in the end zone.
Poole had a career night with 22 carries for 152 yards.
“Braydon really stepped up. He did a great job running the ball,” Perkins said.
Wolf, a sophomore, added 12 carries for 63 yards.
Matt Lomasney, Sean Atkins and Wolf had interceptions to lead the defense, and Jon Suek had three sacks.
CR starts slow, finishes strong in win over ‘Dogs
STEVENSON — Eighth-ranked Castle Rock overcame a sluggish start to crush the Stevenson Bulldogs 61-19 in SWW 1A Trico Division football on Friday.
“They (the Bulldogs) were ready for us, and I’m impressed with how they scored first and took the lead,” CR coach Art Walsh said. “We came out flat and weren’t ready to play, but we got it going and did what we needed to.”
CR (6-1, 3-0 league) took a 13-7 lead in the first quarter on runs of 1 and 5 yards from Jed Lomer and Zack Gehring, respectively. The Rockets led 33-13 at halftime after Kyle Karnofski hit Steven Horsley on a 12-yard scoring toss, Chris Tinney scampered 40 yards to paydirt, and Tinney hit Jean-Luc Allegar on a 22-yard halfback pass.
The Rockets’ attack continued into the third quarter as Karnofski hooked up with Horsley on a 3-yard TD pass, and Gehring chipped in a 3-yard score. The fourth quarter belonged to sophomore Colbie Oster, who picked off a pass and returned it 26 yards to the end zone, and scooped up a fumble recovery and rumbled 38 yards to paydirt.
“Colbie’s a JV kid who had a couple of good plays,” Walsh said. “They (the Bulldogs) tried a hook-and-ladder play on the last play of the game that was fumbled. The ball landed in Colbie’s hands and he scored accidently as the final horn sounded.”
The Rockets carried the ball 57 times for 341 yards, and completed 8-of-15 passes for 133. Tinney carried the ball 20 times for 180 yards, and Karnofski completed 7-14 passes for 111.
Chinooks crush Bruins with big defensive performance
WHITE SALMON — White Salmon came out swinging Friday night, but Kalama overpowered the Bruins in the long run for a 26-6 victory in SWW 1A Trico Division football action.
On the first possession of the game, White Salmon took 17 plays and nine minutes to drive 66 yards for a touchdown. Nick LaRoy returned the kickoff to the White Salmon 49-yard line, and five plays later, Robby Sanders punched in Kalama’s first touchdown on a 1-yarder.
“We played on our heels at first, but the kids decided they didn’t want to lose another one,” Kalama coach Mark Buchanan said. “It was good to get out and get a win after last week (43-0 loss at Castle Rock).”
Kalama (5-2, 2-1 league) dealt a heavy blow two minutes before halftime, when Brandon Walker threw a 19-yard pass to Jacob Neiman that brought the Chinooks within 1 yard of the end zone. Again, it was Sanders who sealed the deal and gave Kalama a one-touchdown lead at the half.
Walker threw two 23-yard touchdown passes in the second half, one to Daniel Oelke and the other to Logan Kallwick. Sanders carried the pigskin 16 times for 128 yards, and Sean McVicker had another 16 carries for 113 yards.
“Sanders played really well, especially on defense, and Nathan Wilfong played a really great game on both sides of the ball,” Buchanan said.
O’Connor, Ducks run wild in 28-6 victory over Pe Ell
PE ELL — Cody O’Connor had a pair of touchdown runs as eighth-ranked Toutle Lake rolled to a 28-6 victory over Pe Ell in Central 2B League football on Friday.
TL (6-1, 5-0 league) led 7-0 after the opening period, and stretched its lead to 21-0 at halftime.
Pe Ell fell to 4-3, 3-3 in league.
“This was a solid win for us,” TL coach Scott Grabenhorst said. “Our offensive line did a good job, and the defensive secondary played much better. We did a good job defending their passing game.”
O’Connor scored on runs of 9 and 1 yards, Jeff Campbell had a 6-yard scoring scamper, and Tim Kelley added a 1-yard TD plunge.
Zac Morain and Sage Chapman each picked off passes for the Ducks, and other defensive standouts included linemen Josh Fias and Brandon Orth, and Jake Berry in the secondary.
Mules’ late two-point try falls short in 27-25 defeat
CATHLAMET — Blake Anderson’s 3-yard touchdown run with 45 seconds remaining brought Wahkiakum to within a two-point conversion of tying Portland Christian, but the Mules couldn’t convert the pass and fell to the Royals 27-25 in a nonleague football game on Friday.
“We went for it, but it came up a little short,” Wahkiakum coach Eric Hansen said. “It was a good game. They’re a good team and shut our run down pretty well. But I thought our defensive backs did a nice job, especially against a passing offense like that.”
Portland Christian (7-1) took a 27-13 lead with 11:53 left in the game when Kyle Seemuth ran in from 19 yards. Tyson Bain blocked the extra point for the Mules.
Wahkiakum (4-3) went to work and scored on a 61-yard pass from Joel Fudge to Bryce McClain with 6:08 left, but the kick was no good. Anderson’s TD run with under a minute left gave the Mules life, but the Royals escaped the two-point try.
McClain and Fudge also hooked up on an 80-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and Zach Schneider had a 13-yard TD gallop, also in the second.
Quarterback Preston Dace rushed for two scores and passed for another to lead PC.
Fudge completed 5-of-11 passes for 114 yards and two TDs, but was picked off twice. McClain rushed for 68 yards.
Hansen praised the defensive efforts of linebacker Luke Thomason, Bain on the defensive line, and McClain and Ryan Helms in the secondary.
Hawks swing momentum, sink Beavers with big plays
HOCKINSON — Hockinson returned a goal-line interception 99 yards for the clinching touchdown in a 28-14 victory over Woodland here Friday in a battle of Greater St. Helens 2A League heavyweights.
The pick, which came with the defending league champion Beavers at the Hockinson 3-yard line with six minutes left in the game, was the last of several huge plays that swung the game the Hawks’ way.
And it helped spoil a monster passing night by Woodland junior quarterback Trevor Hurn, who completed 23-of-41 passes for 262 yards, including a 50-yard TD pass to Brandon Smith in the first half.
“It was a great defensive battle,” said Woodland coach Mark Greenleaf. “It just came down to big plays again. Our kids just played great defense.”
The Beavers (3-4, 1-2 league) fell into third place in the GSHL 2A and were eliminated from the league title hunt by the loss.
Woodland led 14-7 at halftime after a 2-yard touchdown run by Mike Hartley and the Hurn-to-Smith hook-up.
But the Hawks struck for two quick scores in the third quarter. The hosts blocked a Woodland punt to set up a 10-yard touchdown run, then returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown on the Beavers’ ensuing possession, capitalizing on a blown route by a Woodland receiver.
Smith caught seven passes for 106 yards, Brady seven for 70 yards and Elliott Moss five for 58.
Woodland outgained Hockinson 284-262 in total offense.
Defensively for the Beavers. Colby Holt (seven tackles), David Lubinski (13 tackles), J.R. Mario (six tackles) and Moss (four tackles, sack) were standouts.
La Center’s Concannon runs through Fishermen
ILWACO — La Center quarterback Chris Concannon was a one-man wrecking crew with 32 carries for 357 yards and five touchdowns in the Wildcats’ 42-20 victory over Ilwaco in SWW 1A Trico Division football on Friday.
“This was a better effort for us than we showed last week,” Ilwaco coach Kevin McNulty said. “We played good football in the first half, but we had trouble stopping their ground game.”
Ilwaco quarterback Ray Sanchez hooked up with Kolby Kirby on a 29-yard scoring pass in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead, and Skyler Olson returned a kickoff 90 yards as the Fishermen had a 14-0 advantage early in the second quarter. La Center scored twice in the second quarter, and added a touchdown in the third as the Wildcats took a 20-14 advantage into the final period.
Sanchez, who completed 5-of-16 passes for 67 yards, added a 6-yard TD toss to Justin Short in the fourth quarter. The Fishermen (2-5, 0-3 league) also carried the ball 26 times for 86 yards.
White, Blair pass and run Toledo to win over Loggers
TOLEDO — Toledo’s Mike White toted the ball 19 times for 106 yards and two touchdowns as the Indians rolled to a 34-8 victory over Onalaska in SWW 1A Evergreen Division football on Friday.
“We got going in the second quarter when our defense really stepped up,” Toledo coach Perry Herbst said. “Our special teams also really changed the tide of the game.”
Onalaska led 8-0 after the first quarter, but Toledo (5-2, 3-2 league) rallied for 20 points in the second quarter and added two touchdowns in the fourth period.
Toledo quarterback Andrew Blair connected with a 24-yard scoring pass to Johnny Earls, D.J. Herbert returned a punt return 55 yards to paydirt, and Blair had a 15-yard gallop to account for the second period scoring.
White had scoring runs of 2 and 4 yards in the fourth quarter.
Toledo rushed for 217 of its 341 yards, while Onalaska finished with 272 yards. Blair completed 12-of-22 passes for 124 yards, including four passes for 52 yards to Bryson Holmes, and two passes for 49 yards to Earls. Mitch Fiecke also chipped in six carries for 47 yards.
