Prep Roundup: Beavers take lead in district golf tourney

Woodland had four players shoot 78 or better, led by Dakota O’Malley’s 73, to take the first-round lead Thursday in the Southwest 2A District boys golf tournament at Three Rivers Golf Course.
The Beavers posted a five-player total of 392, with Tumwater a stroke back at 393. Mark Morris is third (400) and Hockinson fourth (409) in the 12-team tournament.
“I was very impressed with the way we played. Those top four were very consistent,” Woodland coach Aaron Blackwelder said.
Gerrit Chambers of Hockinson shot a 5-under 67 to take the individual lead, which included a 32 on the back nine.
Also for Woodland, Tegan Winters shot 75, and John Michael Pilot and Jordan Ditzler each had 78. Trey Udy (88) and Kyle Grove (90) missed the cut line of 86 to advance to today’s final round.
Mark Morris joined Tumwater as the only teams to advance all six golfers to today. Trevor Scott led the Monarchs with a 78, followed by Cameron Ford (80), Lexis Lee (80), Tim O’Hollaren (80), Sean Pedersen (81) and Daniel Jodrey (85).
Junior Shane Oliva fired an 81 and was the lone R.A. Long golfer to advance. Grant Webb (87), Kevin Sheehy (88), Kip Lessard (91) and Kevin Nida (93) rounded out the Lumberjacks’ scorecard.
Friday’s final round begins at 11 a.m. The exact amount of state berths from the district tourney won’t be determined until the spring, but Mark Morris coach Dave Polk said “it was around 22 or 23 last year.”
Ilwaco dominates district
OLYMPIA — The final round of the Class 1A District golf championships will have a distinctly Ilwaco flair to it today.
On Thursday, all six Fishermen entered in the tournament made the cut, and Ilwaco golfers finished Day 1 holding the top four individual spots.
Sophomore Ryan Kukula carded a 70 to take the lead, followed by teammates Patrick Whealdon (74), Jack Whealdon (78) and Todd Oakes (81).
Bobby Byrd (88, tied for 10th) and Kyle Breckenridge (90, tied for 14th) also made the cut, which was 92.
Ilwaco held a commanding 53-stroke lead on first place in the team standings, with 391 strokes to Montesano’s 444 and La Center’s 454.
“We had a good day,” Fishermen coach Dan Whealdon said. “The great thing about our top four is that someone different always seems to surface, and they compete very hard with each other.”
VOLLEYBALL
Lumberjills stop Woodland
WOODLAND — R.A. Long played its most complete match of the season as the Lumberjills swept Woodland 25-17, 25-16, 25-6 in Greater St. Helens 2A League volleyball on Thursday.
“This was probably our best match of the season because everyone contributed, and I finally saw the team transition and do what we’ve been practicing all season,” RAL coach Jennifer Hefley said. “We’re getting over the hump.”
Rachel Morrow led RAL (6-3, 2-3 league) with 10 kills and four blocks. Kaylie Dobbins added seven kills, Hannah Johnson had five kills and two blocks, and Kiana Mawae was 18-for-18 serving for 13 points with two aces. Marnee Clancy served 16-of-16 for 11 points and four aces, and Megan McCormack added 10 points on 13-of-14 serving.
Kaitlyn Moses and Staci McLendon had four kills apiece, and Taylor Blanchard served 9-for-9 to lead Woodland (3-6, 1-4 league).
Monarchs romp again
Led by the all-around brilliance of Rebecca Haight, Mark Morris breezed by Ridgefield 25-16, 25-15, 25-12 at Ted M. Natt Court on Thursday to remain undefeated overall and in the Greater St. Helens 2A League.
The Monarchs (9-0, 5-0) have not lost a single game in league play.
Haight served 24 points with six aces, with big contributions on offense (12 kills) and defense (16 digs) to boot.
Danielle Gilchrist dished 20 assists, Tara Anderson had nine service points, 10 digs, seven kills and three blocks, Shantelle Savage had five kills, and Jill Isaacson played strong defensively.
Ducks perfect in Central
TOUTLE — Toutle Lake easily handled Adna here Thursday, winning 25-19, 25-15, 25-19 to remain undefeated in the Central 2B League volleyball standings.
Kiana Saluni and Caitlin Perrin each had six kills for the Ducks (8-2, 5-0 league), and Brandi Malakoff was a top passer. Tiffany Wend added four kills and was 17-for-17 serving, and Hayley Gorton dished seven assists and was 15-for-15.
Abby Gorton added five assists and two kills, and Kelsey Kent was a standout on the right side.
Columbians shred CG
RAINIER — Catlin Gabel became Rainier’s latest volleyball victim Thursday night as the Columbians rolled 25-18, 25-19, 25-10 for their 10th straight Lewis and Clark 3A League.
Niki Wagner was Rainier’s big hitter with nine kills and 5-for-5 serving, and Zaschia Walker served 14-for-17 with eight aces and was also a defensive standout. Amanda Schwegler had five kills, and Mollee Schwegler was also a factor with her four kills, 13-for-14 serving and seven aces.
Setter Cassie Hanks had two kills, 20 assists and 11-for-12 serving with one ace, and Raeanne Hanks added five kills. Danae Hunter served 13-for-15 with four aces for Rainier (17-6 overall).
Lassies swept in three
VANCOUVER — Evergreen dropped Kelso to 3-3 in the Greater St. Helens 4A League with a 25-20, 25-18, 25-19 volleyball win on Thursday.
Kelso’s Jenna DeRosier stepped up and provided seven kills, four digs, three blocks and two aces. Setter Andrea DeRosier had nine digs, 10 assists and four kills, and Lana Nyman (four kills, six digs) and Krystle Tsuda (seven digs) were defensive standouts for the Lassies (4-6 overall).
Chinooks cage ‘Cats
KALAMA — K.C. Schmit hammered 20 kills to lead Kalama to a 25-19, 25-17, 25-27, 25-11 win over La Center here Thursday in a SWW 1A Trico Division volleyball match.
Chelsea Rinard had 12 kills, and Maggie Aschoff 10 kills and four blocks for the winners. Sam Boatman added 26 digs for Kalama (6-4, 5-1 league).
Rockets improve to 10-0
CASTLE ROCK — Fifth-ranked Castle Rock’s volleyball express continued to roll through the SWW 1A Trico Division with a 25-11, 25-5, 25-11 sweep of White Salmon on Tuesday.
Standouts for CR (10-0, 6-0 league) included Taryn Paget (defense, 100 percent serving), Lacey Seidl (six kills, serve receive passing), Emmy Dolan (seven kills) and Heather Shulke (six kills).
Tigers claw Wahkiakum
NAPAVINE — Napavine achieved a quick 25-19, 25-20, 25-22 win over Wahkiakum in Thursday’s Central 2B League volleyball action.
Sarah Doumit hit hard for the Mules with 10 kills, and Blaine Land (seven kills, four stuff blocks) and Shelby Deaton (six kills, three stuff blocks) also stood out for Wahkiakum (7-3, 4-1 league).
Toledo topples Cards
WINLOCK — Kelsey Stone drilled 10 kills and Hillary Roeder had 24 assists as Toledo swept Winlock 27-25, 25-20, 25-12 in SWW 1A Evergreen Division volleyball on Thursday.
Also for Toledo (4-5 league), Roeder served 100 percent and had five tips, Nicole Ewers had five kills, Haylee Ashley added three kills and three stuff blocks, and Holly Durham and Courtney Timmons were defensive standouts.
Naselle rolls by Raymond
RAYMOND — Emily Green had seven of her 13 kills in the final game of Naselle’s 25-21, 21-25, 25-16, 25-18 victory over Raymond here Thursday in Pacific 2B League volleyball action.
Nicole Tarabochia added six kills for the Comets (4-7, 2-1 league). Orianne Condon (defense), Risa Fletcher (passing, defense) and Shelby Leeland (setting) were also standouts.
Bulldogs bite Ilwaco
STEVENSON — After playing two lackluster games, the Ilwaco Lady Fishermen turned up their tempo before falling to Stevenson 25-9, 25-8, 25-21 in SWW 1A Trico Division volleyball on Thursday.
Charlotte Johnson handed out eight assists for Ilwaco (0-10, 0-6 league). Marin McDonnell added four kills and five digs, Alexa Wirkkala had eight digs and two kills, and Carley Kitzman had four digs, two kills and two blocks.
CROSS COUNTRY
Jacks win dual meet
RIDGEFIELD — The R.A. Long boys beat Washougal and Ridgefield in a Greater St. Helens 2A League cross country dual here Thursday to tune up for the league meet next week.
Nathan Richards took second in 17:48 to spark the Lumberjacks, who tallied 31 points to hold off Washougal (33) and Ridgefield (59).
The R.A. Long girls (61) came in third behind Washougal (27) and Ridgefield (48).
Backing Richards were Cole Blackstone (fourth, 18:00), Gray Earnest (seventh, 18:20), Brian Jackson (eighth, 18:21) and Ray Nugent (10th, 18:38).
Allison Schneider paced the Lumberjills by taking fourth in 22:23, and Rachael Washington was seventh in 23:43. Leah Ahrens was 13th in 25:27, Megumi Taylor was 18th in 26:30 and Melissa Chan 22nd in 32:40.
The GSHL 2A meet is next Thursday at Lake Sacajawea.
Monarchs, Hawks split
HOCKINSON — The Mark Morris girls won their half of Hockinson’s cross country meet with 20 points Thursday, beating the host Hawks (36). On the boys’ side, the Hawks beat MM 23-32 despite Chase Bussing’s winning effort for the Monarchs.
Woodland and Kingsway Christian also competed, but did not field complete teams.
Bussing finished the slow, boggy course in 16 minutes and 51 seconds. Close behind were teammates Nate Starr (third, 17:38), Brandon Kuljis (fourth, 17:47), Andres Rodriguez (fifth, 17:52) and Zach Hutton (seventh, 18:12).
The Monarch girls included Hayley Brusewitz (third, 20:55), Savina Rodriguez (fifth, 22:27), Joanna Fenney (sixth, 23:15), Julia Chun (eighth, 24:30) and Natalie Loring (10th, 25:25).
The Woodland boys finished incomplete after one of their runners was disqualified for failing to stay on the course. Tyler King (14th, 19:03), Nick Watts (16th, 19:47), Luke Donald (25th, 21:02) and Caleb Kaiser (27th, 21:11) all finished for the Beavers.
Beverly Courtway (13th, 27:49) and Chelsea Anderson (18th, 33:18) ran for the Woodland girls.
Mules 6th at Rainier Invite
RAINIER, Wash. — Bradlee Pugh grabbed 13th place in leading Wahkiakum to a sixth-place finish overall at the 11-team Rainier Invitational cross country meet on Thursday.
Northwest Christian of Lacey won the boys’ race with 24 points and Kalama was fifth with 136.
Pugh completed the course in 18:09, followed by Connar Riley (25th, 18:45), Kevin O’Connor (26th, 18:47), Collan Riley (33rd, 19:12) and Stewart Bosh (70th, 21:00).
Ryan Chiodo was Kalama’s fastest runner in 17:48, good for 10th place, and the Chinooks also got solid times from Robbie Neal (19th, 18:38), Jeremy Schoenberg (22nd, 18:42), Brandon Osterlund (52nd, 20:17) and Clancy Schriver (56th, 20:25).
Wahkiakum ran incomplete in the girls’ race. Jori McEntire finished in 33rd place in 25:08, Amanda Collier was 43rd in 26:57 and Avery Gribskov was 55th in 28:56.
Kalama’s only girl was Tailor Loree (21st, 23:55).
Columbians dominate
VERNONIA, Ore. — Rainier won both halves of the Vernonia Relays on Thursday, beating four other schools on the 2.5-mile layout.
The Columbians’ Kaylee Kotkins had the fastest split time of any girl (18:56). Jessica Anderson (third, 20:57) and Heather Anthony (11th, 21:23) also had high overall finishes, and Kasie Engstrom (21:58) and Sammi Malsack (22:35) also ran legs for the winning team.
The Rainier boys took third through seventh places. In order, they were Zack Lovell (14:48), Dylan McFadden (14:53), Mark Russell (14:54), Scotty Brezeale (15:00) and Nathan Stecker (15:02).
SOCCER
Jills shut down Beavers
Breanna Stanaway had a goal and two assists, and Alia Mauro was her stingy self in goal for R.A. Long as the Lumberjills blanked Woodland 4-0 in a Greater St. Helens 2A League girls soccer match Thursday at Longview Memorial Stadium.
RAL took a 2-0 lead at halftime on Stanaway’s goal (assisted by Hannah Morgan) and a goal from Jessica Johnson-Kubin (assisted by Alison Kolberg).
The Jills continued to apply the pressure in the second half, with Morgan scoring on a cross from Stanaway, and Rachel Zdilar netting the final score on a Stanaway corner kick.
Spudders edge MM
Ridgefield struck last in a back-and-forth battle with Mark Morris at Northlake Field on Thursday, escaping with a 3-2 victory in Greater St. Helens 2A League soccer action.
The Monarchs trailed twice and rallied to tie the match twice before Ridgefield scored to break a 2-2 tie late in the second half. Down 1-0, MM equalized when Rayna Murphy scored on an assist from Amanda Thomas.
Trailing 2-1 in the second half, Alyssa Marre knotted it up for the Monarchs with a goal on a free kick.
Christy Polis and Maddie White were standouts up front for the Monarchs (8-3-1, 4-2 league), and Thomas played well defensively.
Hope destroys Warriors
TOLEDO — Brittany Hope sparked a second-half rally that sent Toledo/Winlock United soaring past Rochester 6-1 in Thursday’s SWW 1A Evergreen Division soccer game.
The Warriors scored first, and Tiffany Tornow made it 1-1 at halftime for T/W (8-4, 6-2 league). After being sidelined for a week-and-a-half with an injury, Hope exploded in the second half for three straight goals, two of them assisted by Ashlee Coffey.
Next, Candi Zion had the assist on a Haley Helem goal. Hope finished off the game with her fourth score, this one also assisted by Zion.
TENNIS
Jacks thump Washougal
R.A. Long blew by Washougal 5-0, with one match suspended by darkness, in a Greater St. Helens 2A League tennis match on Thursday, setting up a showdown against Mark Morris today for the league title.
Josh Kim (6-4, 6-4) and Jonathan Haukaas (6-4, 6-2) won at first and second singles, respectively, for the Jacks (12-2, 7-1 league).
At first doubles, Johnny Nguyen and Taylor Woodruff cruised 6-1, 6-3. At second doubles, Ryan Cathcart and Carl Johnson breezed 6-1, 6-1, and at third doubles, Erickson Kolberg and Nick Schoen won 6-3, 6-0.

Three Rivers Christian def. R.A. Long 25-18, 24-26, 15-11 — Kati Janicki had five kills for TRC and Brittany Dyer had two blocks. Keana Stout added four aces. Standouts for RAL were Felicia Belt (three aces, six consecutive service points), Angelique Nolan (four kills), Chloe Udd (two aces, two kills, three digs) and Feleesha Roth-Anderson (three aces).
Castle Rock def. White Salmon 25-8, 25-23, 15-7 — Heather Beck, Marissa Hardy and Micah Jenkins paced CR.

Kelso def. Evergreen 25-17, 25-10, 15-6 — Top servers for Kelso were Molly McCoy, Ashley Elbert and Natasha Marith. Top attackers were Shyanne Olivas and Talisa Swanson, the top defender was Mykie Baron and the top blocker was Keela Rupe.

Football
Mark Morris 32, Clatskanie JV 6 — Seth Pedersen connected with Nikko Asbell on a 60-yard touchdown, and Pedersen also ran in a pair of two-point conversions. MM’s other TDs came on a Jake Dills 22-yard fumble recovery, a Blake Hess 43-yard run and a Hess 70-yard kickoff return to start the second half. Rem Bakamus hit Dax McCoy with a two-point conversion and Brian Troske ran in another two-pointer. Jacob Hamlik was a defensive standout for the Monarchs (6-1).
Heritage 28, Kelso 7 — Trevor Feeney tossed a 15-yard TD pass to Chase Johanson for the Scots’ lone score. Slate Miller and Nate Grumbois (fumble recovery) were standouts on defense.
Tennis
R.A. Long 2, Washougal 0 — Garrett Nelson and Myles Harmon won 6-2 in doubles, and Cameron Docksteader and Wayne Ogle prevailed 6-0.
