Prep Roundup: Castle Rock volleyball team captures Lumberjack Invitational title

Castle Rock won two of its pool play matches and split another, and rolled through bracket play culminating with a 25-23, 25-16 victory over Onalaska to win the overall title at the 10-team Lumberjill Invitational volleyball tournament on Joe Moses Court at R.A. Long on Saturday.
The Rockets, ranked sixth in the latest Class 1A Volleyball Coaches Poll, topped Auburn and Onalaska, split with RAL in pool play, and beat Rainier in the quarterfinals and Toutle Lake in the semifinals before sweeping Onalaska in the championship.
Castle Rock also was presented the tournament’s Sportsmanship award, and Rockets’ setter Heather Shulke was named to the All-Tournament team. Other CR standouts included Lacey Seidl (defense, net play), Millie Manring, Justice Allegar and Charlie Hamilton (net play).
In pool play, RAL split with Onalaska (22-25, 25-21) and Castle Rock (19-25, 25-21), and beat Auburn (25-22, 25-22). The Lumberjills opened bracket play with a 25-18, 27-25 win over Woodland, lost to Onalaska in the semifinals 15-25, 24-26 and stopped Toutle Lake 25-10, 25-12 for third and fourth places.
“This was a good tournament for us because we had a rough week and this was our turning point,” RAL coach Jennifer Hefley said. “Everyone played hard and played well, and I’m looking forward to playing Washougal on Tuesday and Woodland Thursday.”
Marnee Clancy earned All-Tournament team honors for RAL. Other standouts included Kaylie Dobbins (28 kills), Katie Sarysz and Aryn Aston (19 kills apiece), Hannah Johnson (17 kills, 87 assists), Brittany Weiand (82 assists, 27 service points), Kiana Mawae (30 points) and Megan McCormack (25 points, defense).
Other players named to the All-Tournament team were Andrea DeRosier (Kelso), Staci McLendon (Woodland), Hayley Gorton (Toutle Lake), Cassie Hanks (Rainier) and Samantha Gordon (Onalaska).
MM plays well at Capitol City Invite
OLYMPIA — Mark Morris won two of three pool play matches, but dropped both bracket contests in the Capitol City Invitational volleyball tournament at Capital High School on Saturday.
In pool play, MM topped Gig Harbor (25-19, 25-17) and Timberline (25-22, 25-23), and split with Tumwater (25-27, 25-20). In bracket play, the Lady Monarchs fell to Black Hills (31-29, 13-25, 13-15), and were eliminated by North Mason (25-21, 19-25, 5-15).
Standouts for MM included Shawna Smith (31 service points, 15 digs), Danielle Gilchrist (24 points, 87 assists), Tara Anderson (20 points, nine digs, 15 kills), Rebecca Haight (17 points with six aces, 58 kills, 11 digs) and Shantelle Savage (19 kills).
MM hosts Hockinson on Tuesday night.
Eagles defy Indians
TOLEDO — Three Rivers Christian defeated Toledo’s junior varsity 25-18, 25-10, 15-8 in Monday’s volleyball.
Keana Stout was a defensive standout for the Eagles, and Ashley Hawley contributed four kills. Kayla Eicholtz had six aces in the first game, and Kati Janicki added seven in the second.
CROSS COUNTRY
Nagunst, Rainier boys win Red Ribbon Run
RAINIER — Rainier’s Kayla Nagunst won the girls race, and the Columbians claimed the boys team crown at the annual 4-team Red Ribbon Run cross country meet on Saturday.
Rainier placed all five of its boys in the top-10 to win the team title with 33 points. Mark Russell placed fourth in 18 minutes, 50 seconds, followed by Dylan McFadden (fifth, 19:07), Scotty Brezeale (seventh, 19:45), Nathan Stecker (eighth, 19:49) and Zack Lovell (ninth, 19:58).
Banks won the girls team crown, followed by Rainier with 60 points.
Nagunst broke the tape for Rainier in 21:05, followed by teammates Kaylee Kotkins (fourth, 22:49), Katie Peabody (16th, 28:26), Jessica Anderson (19th, 29:26) and Jessica Neumann (20th, 29:14).
FOOTBALL
Indians manhandled by tough Forks squad
FORKS — Forks’ defense held Toledo scoreless for three periods before the Indians found the end zone in a 30-12 loss to the Spartans in SWW 1A Evergreen Divison football on Friday.
Toledo (4-2, 2-2 league) trailed 23-0 entering the fourth quarter when Preston Tomes recovered a fumble and rambled 38 yards to the end zone. D.J. Herbert hauled in a 25-yard scoring pass from Andrew Blair for Toledo’s second touchdown later in the period.
The Indians host Onalaska on Friday.
TENNIS
Scots dispatch Timberwolves
Kelso claimed a 4-1 win on Monday in a makeup tennis match against Heritage.
Collin Greig (6-1, 6-1) was Kelso’s only singles winner, but the Hilanders swept the doubles matches with the teams of Warat Sukaphiboom and Joel Rambo (6-1, 6-1), Keevin Lane and Robbie Peterson (6-3, 6-4), and Tyler Mitchell and Ty Coleman (6-2, 6-2).
Kelso (4-3 in league) makes up another match at home Tuesday, this one against Mountain View.
Monarchs blank Spudders
There were some close doubles matches, but Mark Morris swept Ridgefield 6-0 in Monday’s tennis.
In first doubles, Collin Luh and Jared Houten won 6-7 (10-8), 6-2, 6-3, and the third doubles team of Ethan Winters and Patrick Domreis won 6-1, 5-7,
6-4. Ryan Dawkins and Kelly Gilchrest had an easier time of it, cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win.
Willie Brenc (6-2, 6-1), Jeff Koss (6-1, 6-2), and Evan Jones (6-2, 6-0) won the singles for the Monarchs.
Mark Morris (10-2 overall) visits Washougal on Wednesday.
GOLF
Jacks claim title at Washougal
WASHOUGAL — Washougal boasted the lowest individual score at Orchard Hills Golf Course on Monday, but R.A. Long took the team victory 222-231.
Connor O’Neill of the Panthers fired a 39 to claim the medal. The Jacks’ top five were Kip Lessard (42), Grant Webb (42), Kevin Sheehy (43), Drew Zande (46), and Shane Oliva (49).

Football
Kelso 26, Mountain View 19 — Kelso’s standouts were tight end Eli Ennis and linebacker Roar Iverson.
Castle Rock 20, Kalama 6 — Brad Williamson hurled three touchdown passes for the Rock: one of 60 yards to Jean-Luc Allegar, one of 15 to Wes Oja, and one of 25 to Zeke Lomer. Defensive back Marcus Deyo played strong for CR.
Mark Morris 20, Woodland 6 — Casey Devries and Jeremy Wolf punched in short TD runs for MM, and Wolf threw to Nolan Burnett for a two-point conversion. Nathan Gatts of the Monarchs picked off a pass and ran it back 35 yards for a touchdown, and Wolf and Cody Molner were also defensive standouts.
R.A. Long 28, Hockinson 20 — Jordan Kilgore carried the ball 17 times for the Jacks, gaining 180 yards and scoring once. Tyler Weaver ran for 70 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries, and Sergio Vasquez ran for 85 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries. Linebacker Eric Cottrell made 13 tackles.

Kelso 2, Heritage 2 — Kelso’s winners were Bryce LaBiche (8-6) and Stu Larson (8-4)
Mark Morris 5, Ridgefield 0 — The MM winners were Gabe Olano (8-3) and the teams of Krammer Rapp and Tyler Stewart (8-2), Smyth May and Preston Wolf (8-6), and John Austin and Chris London (8-1).
Golf
R.A. Long 260, Washougal 281 — R.A. Long’s Matt Sheehy was the medalist with a 48.
