The Kelso City Council is expected to choose a temporary replacement for Paul Brachvogel on Oct. 21 after interviewing three finalists for interim city manager chosen by a headhunting firm.
Brachvogel is resigning Oct. 24 to become the Cowlitz PUD’s attorney.
Prothman Group, a Seattle-based recruiter, is helping the city quickly find someone to take over Brachvogel’s duties until a permanent replacement is hired.
After soliciting and reviewing candidates for the permanent position, Prothman will whittle down the list to the top 13 to 15 applicants. The City Council will participate in picking a handful of favorites, and then city staff and community members will be asked to help narrow that pool to one choice.
According to Mayor David Futcher, the council hopes the interim city manager could provide an outsider’s perspective on the city’s structure and help it become more efficient. The council also hopes the interim manager would relay information to Prothman about Kelso’s culture that might be useful in ensuring candidates for the permanent job would be a good fit.
A permanent replacement for Brachvogel likely will not start the job until February, Futcher said.
