Whether your destination is the home and garden show in Tacoma, the Seahawks game in Seattle or grandma’s house, be ready for serious delays on northbound Interstate 5 this weekend.
The Washington Department of Transportation is advising drivers to pack their patience and plan ahead due to multiple lane closures that will squeeze freeway traffic down to one lane in Pierce and Thurston counties.
The potential for backups is high, and delays could extend into Lewis County should an incident or collision occur, WSDOT advised.
Work crews repairing freeway pavement are setting up work zones in the Nisqually area overnight Friday and in Lakewood overnight Saturday.
“If at all possible, avoid northbound I-5 in these areas when the work is going on,” said WSDOT Olympic Region administrator Kevin Dayton.
Dayton said northbound motorists destined for King County may choose to detour at State Route 512 and continue north using SR 167.
There are a number of ways to check alternative routes and get traffic reports:
• Visit www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic to check your route
• Call 511 for real-time traffic information
• Tune to highway advisory and local radio stations.
