Week 5 Scouting Report

Player to Watch, Offense
QB Trevor Hurn, Woodland
Hurn was terrific in the Beavers’ victory over La Center last week, their most solid performance of the season. The junior quarterback had platooned with senior Nathan Shoup under center in Woodland’s first three games, but started against the ‘Cats and completed 9-of-10 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns. That kind of efficiency will make it hard for the upset-minded Jacks to deal with the Beavers’ balanced offense.
Player to Watch, Defense
DE Jordan Wishard, Kelso
For the second consecutive week, the scouting report has its eye on the Scotties’ stop troops. Kelso takes on Evergreen tonight in the most important game on the GSHL 4A slate, and is expected to be at full strength.
Wishard was a devastating presence for the Scots in last week’s win over Columbia River. His pressure, penetration and all-around havoc-wreaking savvy in the trenches will be in crucial demand.
Coach to Watch
Erik Bertram, R.A. Long
The Jacks vs. Beavers war tonight probably won’t boil down to a coaching chess match. Bertram’s impact — whatever it may turn out to be — has already been made this week, because the secret to RAL’s competitiveness (or lack thereof) will be its preparation, intensity and effort.
Game plans will be secondary in deciding the outcome. The worst cliche’ in amateur sports (“Who wants it more?”) will actually be the key.
