The volleyball squads in the NWAACC Western Division are “all very equal in talent,” according to Lower Columbia coach Marcy Gilchrist.
The elite teams, in her opinion, will separate themselves by playing excellent volleyball on a consistent basis.
“Whoever is on their ‘A’ game and plays at their peak throughout the match will win,” Gilchrist said. “We have to have it going every game.”
With division rival Clark at Myklebust Gymnasium on Wednesday for the Lady Devil’s home league opener, LCC “came in ready to go.”
Cassie Koering owned the net, Denali Preston anchored the defense, Tarin Bond served bullets, and 5-foot-6 Kari Sarysz even stuff-blocked her former R.A. Long teammate, 6-footer Shyra Hoffman, as the Devils posted a 25-20, 21-25, 25-10, 27-25 victory.
Lower Columbia’s first league win of the season upped its Western Division mark to 1-2.
“Oh my God,” said Gilchrist, when asked to describe the intensity of the match. “It was so awesome.”
After letting the second game slip away due to “overconfidence,” the Devils “went back to work,” Gilchrist said. “We did what we needed to do. When you face a good team that is in desperation like Clark, and they start clawing for every point, the fourth game becomes pivotal. They kept hammering, we kept responding.
“The fourth game was so fun to watch,” she added. “The girls were working together and celebrating everything that they did. It was also a great fan turnout. The LCC baseball team came and cheered us on.”
Koering had 16 kills and seven blocks, and Emily Damschen smacked 13 kills to lead the Lady Devils offense. Kacie DeRosier dished out 35 assists.
Sarysz added three blocks to help LCC overcome a Clark squad that boasts five players 6-foot-0 or taller on its roster, and Lacey Flatz “slowed down a lot of shots.”
Preston had 14 digs, and Bond served nine aces.
