State sets limit on 60-day medical marijuana supply

SEATTLE — The state Health Department has set a final rule defining a 60-day supply of medical marijuana at 24 ounces and up to 15 plants.

The rule approved Thursday takes effect Nov. 2.

Previously, Washington’s medical marijuana law allowed qualifying patients to have up to a 60-day supply, but didn’t say how much that was. The result was a lot of confusion, with patients unsure how much they were allowed to have and police officers arresting people who they thought had too much.

State officials say the 24-ounce limit is the same as Oregon’s, and more than allowed in some other states with medical marijuana laws, but less than allowed in several California counties.

Patient advocates argued for a higher limit.

Editor's note: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that the rule approved takes effect Nov. 1. The rule takes effect Nov. 2.

" With marijuana now available by prescription, does that mean that anyone caught with it without a prescription will be charged with a felony? No matter what quantity? It only makes sense. You get caught with any other prescription drug without a prescription it's a felony. Why not pot? "

" There has to be more info than tdn is putting out. This is sad for all the medical cannabis patients out there that don't have the skills to grow two pounds of meds from 15 plants. This is just going to clog up the courts with victimless crimes, putting more sick people in jail is a crime in it's own.
Shame on the health department. Mabey you or a close friend or family member will get cancer and waste away without cannabis because of your own stupid laws. People need to stop making up others minds for them. Let people do as they will as long as they are not hurting others. "

" 3 ounces a week! I don't know anyone that has ever had to smoke, eat or drink (tea) that much in a week! It is good that Washington has finally set up amounts and such. I still wonder though why a person needs 3 ounces a week! When I smoked an ounce would last almost a month! (maybe I was just a lightweight... LOL). Now to get the feds out of the medical patients stash! "

" Please. Victimless crimes? Sick people in jail? First, the majority of the people in jail ARE sick- from the drugs that they are taking. Second, marihuana is NOT medicine. There are so many other, more effective drugs available for the control of all manner of side effects that this argument is simply a crock. It's a well organized strategy pushed forward by folks like George Soros and NORML to prey on people's fears and emotions. Marihauana makes people stoned, pure and simple. But it's no more medicine than a straight shot of Jim Beam. And it's no more a victimless crime than the meth that tweakers are buying from the copper wire they steal. "

" Obviously the doctors are prescribing marijuana because it is beneficial to their patients. Unlike all the others drugs that the pharmaceutical companies pay doctors to push, marijuana is being prescribe because it is an effective drugs that under proper use helps people with certain illnesses. Any drug is bad if abused and marijuana is no different. People need to get over their prejudices about marijuana and do some research and educate yourself to the facts. Alcohol has destroyed more life's than any illegal drug and is legal to anyone over 21 years of age so maybe they should start to whine about that instead of a beneficial prescription drug that is given to patients who are dying and in pain. "

" I can't believe the people at the DOH . Way to bow down to law enforcement . What spineless cowards . They should of stuck with there initial limit of a 10 X 10 canapy . 15 plants isn't going to be able to get most patients their 60 day supply of 24 ounces . I know many people who only get roughly 10 - 14 grams per plant . That's around 7.5 ounces , 16.5 ounces short of their 60 day supply . Now they will have to either risk committing a crime by going over the plant count or come up with around an extra $4125 ( $250 an ounce ) every 60 days for their medicine . I bet all the pot dealers in Washington are jumping for joy knowing the state has now given them so many new customers . I also see a lot of unintelligent comments being made on this post . First , transplant - you are so out of touch with reality and common sense it makes me sick . You obviously have no knowledge what so ever when it comes to marijuana . Maybe people don't want to take an assortment of different pills with dangerous , sometimes fatal side effects . Also , their NOT more effective . Yes , it is a victimless crime . No one is stealing copper wire or anything else to get their marijuana . "

" biasmedia : I'm a medical marijuana patient and it's not a green cross card . I have no idea what you're talking about and from the comments on your post either do you . I know from experience that it's not easy to get a medical marijuana perscription . You or the rest of the tax payers are not paying for anyones " fix " of marijuana . The patient pays for 100% of their own medicine . Become informed before you just say things that are totally untrue . "

biasmedia wrote on Oct 2, 2008 6:58 PM:

" 24 ounces in 60 days is a lot of weed, thats not even good on your home furnishings , must less your lungs, that would last me six months. but hey, its all good, at least the masses are coming to terms with how senseless it is to carry on with this pointless drug war. "

DUH wrote on Oct 2, 2008 8:06 PM:

" I think most people's problem with it's medicinal value is its unconventional way it is taken. It's not a pill or tablet. It's not a liquid. It isn't given by injection. Aspirin, Tylenol, Motrin, and a host of other drugs are available over the counter and yet they can kill if not taken correctly. I have yet to hear of anyone overdosing on marijuana. No I am not a pothead. I have never even tried it in my life but I won't second guess doctors that know whats best for their patients. "

" To rosey glasses, most people that have been using cannabis medicaly for a long period of time are not after the plant itself, nor the buds like most people think. We are after the true medicine that this plant produces Tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC, Δ9-THC, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), Δ1-tetrahydrocannabinol. A normal plant that takes 3 to 4 months + from start to finish will only yeild 7% to 15% of the total plant weight pure thc using the water extraction method. That's not much medicine at all. To transplant, If a person steals they have victimized the person they have taken from. How is a tweeker victimizing anyone by being a tweeker? Your all messed up, pull your head out and yawn. Mabey that might help ya some. "

" To biasmedia, You need to check your spelling and how you put your words together so you can be understood better. There are hundreds of opiates and synthetic opioids being prescibed in the u.s. for pain and many other medical reasons. Methadone is what is prescibed to help kick heroin. Vicodine to oxycontin with hundreds in between for pain and other illnesses. All have killed and hooked there users. Not good old mary jane. TRUELY THE SAFEST MEDICINE ON THE PLANET. I thank god for creating the cannabis plant everyday. "

" I plant a garden every spring. It includes tomatoes, squash, and a few other common varieties of vegetables. I buy my seeds from distributors like Burpee that have beena in business for a long time. They do not give me any reasonable guarantee of what my plant will produce in any set grow season. I don't know where the people who can grow pot legally get their seeds from, but I doubt there is any guarantee of what each plant will yield either. Any dirt farmer can tell you there is more to growing a quality high quality plant of any kind than just watering it and hoping for the best. This whole theory of how many plants will yield x amount of usable product is crazy. Talk about taking up time in the legal system, this will be like watching the paint dry to determine if someone has actually broken the law before sitting on the park bench and being accused of defacing public property. Maybe everyone attempting to grow pot should be required to watch 13 weeks of Green Acres reruns, before giving them their license to grow their weed. "

And to cure their sickness they will do anything from stealing to prostitution or even worse to get "well" . I've seen it with my own eyes . beazelbud and SPARROW have the only intelligent comments I've read on this post ( besides myself....lol ) "

I think opinionated 1 does know something about this issue. This isn't one step closer to making it totally legal. It just sets guidelines for what is legal now. I believe you're the one that doesn't have a clue about marijuana. Comparing marijuana to heroin shows how little you know about marijuana. Now don't even accuse me of being a pothead. I will take a random urine test any time. I already do for my job. BTW I think any drug addict might say marijuana was the first drug the got hooked on. But I bet every one of them tried alcohol first. They just forget that alcohol is a drug as well. "
