The public is invited to kick off Crime Prevention Month by participating in this week’s “Celebrate Safe Communities” activities with the Longview Police Department.
Police have organized a three-day open house at the LPD Highlands Satellite Office to show citizens how to make crime prevention a priority, according to a police department press release.
Open house hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the police satellite office, 216 30th Ave., behind the St. Helens grocery store in Longview.
Celebrate Safe Communities is a new project to promote these successful local law enforcement and community partnerships:
• Block Watch — There are 44 Block Watch groups registered in Longview, but some are more active than others, according to Cindy Lopez Werth, LPD community service officer and community liaison.
“We’d like to energize the less active ones and sign up new groups,” Lopez Werth said.
• Highlands Neighborhood Association — The police department also has been working with this newly formed group to improve the neighborhood’s image.
• Alley Gators —The police department’s volunteer citizen patrol is another example of community partnerships.
At the open house, police will hand out free “Neighborhood Watch Needs YOU” booklets, “Celebrate Safe Communities” stickers and other information to encourage Longview residents to start or reactivate their own Block Watch groups.
Citizens may also pick up a free gun lock and booklets on firearms safety and the law. Longview residents can register their bikes for free at the open house, which is important for quickly reuniting found or recovered stolen bikes with their owners.
The national Celebrate Safe Communities partners include the National Crime Prevention Council and the National Sheriff’s Association. Funding support is provided by the Bureau of Justice Assistance.
