Briefs: Classical guitar concert is Sunday

Classical guitarist Fabian Carrera will play a solo recital at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 1428 22nd Ave., Longview.
A native of Ecuador, Carrera studied at the National Music Conservatory of Quito, from which he got degrees in guitar performance and music education.
Carrera has played at Corcoran Museum in Baltimore and with the National Symphonic Orchestra of Ecuador. Locally, he has performed with the Columbian Chorale and Southwest Washington Symphony.
His program Sunday includes works by Villa-Lobos, Jorge Morel and Carlos Bonilla Chavez, with whom Carrera studied.
The concert is a benefit for the Cowlitz Free Medical Clinic.
'Book Chat' debuts
"Book Chat," a 30-minute program that will feature an interview with writers or a conversation about books and what people are reading, has started on KLTV.
The program is hosted by Alan Rose, an author who also organizes WordFest, Longview's monthly gathering of readers and writers.
"In this day of TiVo, Blu-Ray, and Xbox, there are still many people who love to read and discuss books," said Rose. "Book Chat is a sibling of WordFest, a kind of book discussion group on TV."
Each program will air on KLTV three times a week over a month: 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, 10 a.m. Thursdays and 12:30 a.m. on Fridays.
The first program features local writer Jim LeMonds, author of "South of Seattle" and "Deadfall."
Upcoming Book Chat programs will feature cookbook author Suzanne Martinson and science fiction author Greg Bear, an upcoming guest during the Northwest Voices series.
Episodes will be posted for viewing on the Longview Public Library Web site and on the Book Chat page at www.alan-rose.com.

N.W. Jazz Orchestra plans concert
The Northwest Jazz Orchestra will play a variety of jazz styles during "A Collection for Connoisseurs," a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at Calvary Community Church, 2655 38th Ave.
A $5 donation is suggested.
The group directed by John Veltkamp and David Klander, is made up mostly of music teachers and retired professional musicians.
This is its second full year of concerts.
The Jazz Orchestra will also perform as part of the Southwest Washington Symphony's Pops Concert on Oct. 5 at the Columbia Theatre.
Gathering to honor late Donna DeJarnatt
A gathering in honor of the late Donna DeJarnatt will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Broadway Gallery, 1418 Commerce Ave., Longview.
The last of her artworks will be offered for sale to benefit the gallery and a scholarship fund. Music and refreshments will be provided.
DeJarnatt, one of the founding members of the gallery, died July 27.
Faculty recital is Saturday
The 5th annual Longview School District Faculty Recital will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the R.A. Long auditorium.
This concert will feature a saxophone concerto performed by David Taylor, the string faculty and community members.
It will also feature a couple jazz tunes by the combo "Off the Cuff," and vocal and instrumental solos by Gloria Staat, Buddy Patten Linda Monahan and others.
More than 10 schools in Longview and Kelso will be represented.
Columbia River Country Days Fest debuts
The first Columbia River Country Days festival will run Oct. 3-4 in Wahkiakum County.
A Slow Moving Parade with child-sized cars, old autos, tractors and other slow-moving vehicles will lead off the festivities at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 3. Wahkiakum's historic trolley It will take on rides at 2 p.m. at the marina, then lead the parade.
The pumpkin patch at Stockhouse Farm on Puget Island will open at 3 p.m. Oct. 3. A Wine and Chocolate Fete will start at 6 p.m. at the Cathlamet Wine Shop; tickets cost $10.
Tours of working farms will be offered from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 4, with other events in Cathlamet and Skamokawa. A Lamp Lit Dinner on the Gray's River Covered Bridge will start at 4:30 p.m. Tickets cost $25.
