One of the three new Phoenix House buildings is rising on Clark Street in West Kelso.

Erik Jahn, left, and Todd Kysar of Diggin’ It Excavating assemble fire line piping Friday forthe Phoenix House, a joint project by Longview’s Drug Abuse Prevention Center and the Longview Housing Authority.

The $3 million transitional housing complex is for mothers who are recovering from drugs to live with their children, giving up to 20 families an alternative to returning to their old neighborhoods, where mothers are more likely to begin using drugs again. It’s supposed to be operational in April.

" What about the fathers? I've seen some terrible mothers and some decent fathers. This is discrimination. "

" Usually projects like this are funded by things called "grants" and possibly the federal government as well as the state. "

" I think it is a wonderful idea building these home for women who are despartly trying to get clean. The further away from where these women were to where they are trying be now is great. And as for the children, maby this might just be the change they need to get a fresh start at life. As for the father who was asking about men who are addicted to drugs and have custody of their children and tring to get turned around I think he is right to think this is a sort of discrimenation!!!! "

" It is discrimination. Assistance in this country is so heavily geared to women, it's beyond ridiculous. I know of many good fathers with custody that can only dream of this kind of opportunity. As for keeping people away from where they used? Well, in a community this small, I find that suggestion laffable. Those in the know...know this saying, "no matter where you go...there you are". "

" What I think is instead of crying discrimination, applaud them for atleast opening something! Then see what you can do to make a difference for the dads in the area. Its worth a try.Anything for the children. "

" Just an FYI....I know Gus Nolte and his passion to help people get clean and stay clean, I bet if you contacted DAPC and/or Mr. Nolte specifically, a home like this for men is next on his agenda... TDN.... perhaps a follow up piece with Mr. Nolte adressing this critisism that the project is receiving and asking if he has plans in the works to assist single fathers trying to get and stay clean and sober??? Just an idea! p.s. I appreciate the update!! "
